What a priceless treasure!!! China and Russia will be knocking on Iran's door soon for info on this latest treasure trove..Apparently, there was little damage done when it was shot down...Billions of money spent on development only to fall right in Iran's lap in the end..Not bad :)

Iran says it shot down unmanned US spy plane

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's armed forces have shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country's eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

An unidentified military official quoted in the report warned of a strong and crushing response to any violations of the country's airspace by American drone aircraft.

"An advanced RQ170 unmanned American spy plane was shot down by Iran's armed forces. It suffered minor damage and is now in possession of Iran's armed forces," IRNA quoted the official as saying.

No further details were published.

Iran is locked in a dispute with the U.S. and its allies over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and that it seeks to generate electricity and produce isotopes to treat medical patients.

Iran said in January that two pilotless spy planes it had shot down over its airspace were operated by the United States and offered to put them on public display.

The Islamic Republic holds frequent military drills, primarily to assert an ability to defend against a potential U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities.

Tehran has focused part of its military strategy on producing drones for reconnaissance and attacking purposes.

Iran announced three years ago it had built an unmanned aircraft with a range of more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers), far enough to reach Israel.

Ahmadinejad unveiled Iran's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft in August 2010, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

it is a stealth UAV. So it is significant that Iran managed to detect it and shoot it down.

A senior Iranian military official says Iran's Army has shot down a remote-controlled reconnaissance drone operated by the US military in the eastern part of the country.

The informed source said on Sunday that Iran Army's electronic warfare unit successfully targeted the American-built RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft after it crossed into Iranian airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan.

He added that the US reconnaissance drone has been seized with minimum damage.

The RQ-170 is a stealth unmanned aircraft designed and developed by Lockheed Martin Company.

The US military and the CIA use the drone to launch missile strikes in Afghanistan and in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region.

The unnamed Iranian military official further added that “due to the clear border violation, the operational and electronic measures taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces against invading aircraft will not remain limited to the Iran's borders."

The report comes as the United States has beefed up its military presence in and around the Persian Gulf region in recent months in the wake of popular uprising in Bahrain.

The US Department of Defense says Washington is closely monitoring the developments in Bahrain, which is the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet and holds some 4,200 US service members.

thats true, in order to expose the US government/ military as hypocrites and liars, it would best to withhold the pictures until it is denied and then release it.

Iran downs US drone violating eastern airspace: Reports

AFP | Dec 4, 2011, 09.21PM IST

Comments (2)

TEHRAN: Iran's military on Sunday shot down a US Army RQ-170 unmanned aerial vehicle after it "briefly violated" Iranian territory in the east, near the Afghanistan and Pakistan borders, local media said.

Al-Alam Arabic language satellite channel, quoting a military source, said the drone was shot down "a few hours ago."

Fars news agency said the drone had violated Iran's airspace at its eastern borders. Fars has close ties to the Revolutionary Guards, an elite force in charge of the country's air defence and missile programmes.

"Our air defence and electronic warfare units managed to identify and shoot down an advanced unmanned spy aircraft -- RQ-170 -- after it briefly violated the eastern border territory," Fars said, quoting an unnamed military source.

The drone "was downed with slight damage. It is now under the control of our forces," the source added, calling the incident "a blatant territorial violation."

The RQ-170 Sentinel is a reconnaissance drone whose existence was revealed in 2009 by specialised media, and later confirmed by the US Air Force in 2010.

In January, Iran announced that its forces had downed two US drones after they violated Iranian-controlled airspace. It later said it would put the aircraft on public display.

The US military and Central Intelligence Agency routinely use drones to monitor military activity in the region. They have also reportedly used them to launch missile strikes in Yemen as well as in Afghanistan and Pakistan's lawless tribal belt.

The downed UAV, if true, is the latest Stealth UAV technology available. It would be a jewel if the military gifts, it is a windfall even if it is badly damaged.

I am curious to see photos and confirmations.

Iran military says it shot down US drone in east province

Revolutionary Guard downs an "intruding RQ-170 American drone" in eastern Iran, Iran's Arabic-language state TV reports; Tehran warns its response will take place outside of Iran's borders.

Iran's military has shot down a US reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran and has threatened to respond to the violation of Iranian airspace, a military source told state television on Sunday.

"Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran," Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying.

"The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the Iranian armed forces."

Iran shot down the drone at a time when it is trying to contain foreign reaction to the storming of the British embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, shortly after London announced that it would impose sanctions on Iran's central bank in connection with Iran's controversial nuclear enrichment program.

Britain evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats in London in retaliation, and several other EU members recalled their ambassadors from Tehran.

The attack dragged Iran's relations with Europe to a long-time low.

"The Iranian military's response to the American spy drone's violation of our airspace will not be limited to Iran's borders," the military source said, without elaborating.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran's nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails to resolve the nuclear dispute.

Iran has dismissed reports of possible US or Israeli plans to strike Iran, warning that it would respond to any such assault by attacking US interests in the Gulf and Israel.

Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz. About 40 percent of all traded oil leaves the Gulf region through the strategic waterway.

Iran said in July it had shot down an unmanned US spy plane over the holy city of Qom, near its Fordu nuclear site.

In related news, Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese website al-Intiqad on Sunday posted what they claim to be pictures of Israeli spy devices that IAF aircraft destroyed on Friday after they had been discovered in southern Lebanon.

Two people were injured Friday during an explosion in the southern Lebanese towns of Srifa and Deir Kifa, Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star reported.

The report suggested that the explosion may have been caused by an IDF drone, but also speculated that it was a result of a cluster bomb.

Jerusalem has alleged that Iran has heavily armed Hezbollah by transferring weapons through Syria.

Iran shoots down U.S. spy drone: reports
TEHRAN, Dec. 4 (MNA) - Iranian armed forces on Sunday downed an unmanned U.S. spy drone along Iran’s eastern border, Iran’s media reported.
The wreckage of the Lockheed-Martin RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone was largely intact after it was downed, the Fars news agency said.

“Iran’s army has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran,” Arabic-language al-Alam TV said, quoting an anonymous source.

“The spy drone, which has been downed with little damage, was seized by the armed forces,” the news network added.

The cyber warfare unit managed to take over controls of the drone and bring it down, a military official said, according to the TV.

An unnamed military official also told the Fars that Iran’s response “will not be limited to the country’s borders.”

*************************************************************************************************

If it was brought down by hacking into the drone's control system, then the US army should start worrying about their capacity and ability to wage war..The days of having monopoly over technology are long gone..Iran MUST invest more in defensive capabilities(electronic warfare technology, radar processing technology etc.) and an effective deterrent capability.

Well done Iran :) :tank: :iran: :salute:

I am hoping that there is some proof from Iran or acknowledgement by the US to confirm this incident.

If the US denies, then Iran will have to show the wreckage or the damaged UAV. If Iran does not follow through,
the rumors of manufactured lies will greatly damage Iran. But in this case, Iran may wish not let US know the
extend of damage on the UAV and as such avoid displaying it to keep US guessing the degree of damage done.
Best for Iran would be to isolate an important component of the UAV and put that on display. This is not an ideal
gain for Iran but much better than showing nothing for the proof.

However, the worst scenario is that this whole news is not at all true due to similar reporting cases in the past (other drone shot down claims that have never been verified) , then the damage is clausal and a major blow to Iran at these very sensitive times.

Another possibility is if the drone shot downed is the RQ-170 and in fact is some other one, then the damage falls on
Iranian armed forces for the lack of minimum recognition knowledge for its enemies capabilities.

Here is an interesting read in follow up of this news:  http://www.zerohedge.com/news/iran-military-shoots-down-us-drone

This sounds familiar to a downing report released in July or January. I remember the Yanks grudgingly admitting to this but claiming it was an old run-of-the mill model.

Good job nonetheless !

If it really turns out to be "the Beast of Kandahar", it will definitely tip the scales for Iran.

ISAF says drone lost over Afghanistan late last week

BONN | Sun Dec 4, 2011 1:47pm EST
(Reuters) - A surveillance drone flying over western Afghanistan had gone out of control late last week and may be the one Iran said it had shot down over its own airspace, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Sunday.

"The UAV to which the Iranians are referring may be a U.S. unarmed reconnaissance aircraft that had been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week. The operators of the UAV lost control of the aircraft and had been working to determine its status," an ISAF statement said.

The statement about the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was issued in Kabul and released to reporters covering an international conference on Afghanistan in the German city Bonn.
