The fact that Iran is working on its own Version of S-300 (let's call it IS-300) is as evident as daylight.

I have some information as to where the technology/assistance is coming from but as for discussing the
Iran/Russia relations, as Maiser said, there will be relations between the two countries in various forms for years to come. But Iran must have received the message clearly that depending on others for defence technologies is only building in the sand and nothing else.

With the information available, I am confident Iran has already moved away from procurement from abroad and is expanding the domestic facilities substantially towards home grown defence technologies. Just wait and watch the news in the next twelve months. You will be surprised.

Catsoo

i am glade that iran refuses to make stupid decisions on military matters. it is very wise for iran to peruse a domestic weapons manufacturing that ONLY for defensive weapons. iran has, in this faction, reduced the cost of maintaining an efficient military machine while keeping the military and the MOD in tight civil control. mashallah. a true success indeed and yet more to come.

Iran makes its own air defense system and we are well covered for in the short to medium range radius. However, the S-300/400 systems are long range air defense systems that are unchallenged in the world by any other air defense system.

UNQUOTE

Medium range missiles are obsolete in a region where iran is surrounded by other countries who posses longer range missile defense system.
Recently a revealed plot shows that saudi arabia would open its sky for israeli planes to attack iran.does iran posses the ability to protect itself from all of its neighbors in terms of air defense?

your statement makes no logic at all. I think you are a little confused about military equiptment. just because some countries have long range air defence missiles does not make midiam range air defence missiles obsolete. what does make air defence missiles "obsolete" is an aircraft's ability to defeat the missile SYSTEM as a hole. i am not sure that can be as easly done in case of s-200s that iran has because iran has been working hard to improve its

The S-200 isnt really much of a threat to enemy airpower other than Tankers and AWACs. It is too bulky, not designed to manuever and is over 40 years old and pretty easy to Jam. The S-200's only real value is its companion long range radars (for early warning). But indeed, how obsolete a SAM is depends on whether your opponent has the technology to defeat it. Now, in the case of Iran's neighbors across the Persian Gulf, they do have the proper missiles capable of taking out Iran's Medium range SAMs (I-Hawk and Shahin) from a safe distance. Now that doesnt necessarily mean Iran's SAMs are obsolete, simply that they arent invincible either..

An interesting article indeed, thank you sir!

and youd agree with me then that that statement can be pretty much applied to any army to some extent or another?
Iran will liberate Palestine, its only a matter of time and the ZioNazis know that, so theyre going down destructing everything.

It will happen in due time. Palestinians and proper Jews will be able to unite and live under peace!

For the most part, yes. All SAMs are dangerous and should never be ignored, just some are much more dangeous than others (such as PAC, S-300/400, HQ-9 etc.). Even old SA-2s are still dangerous to an unprotected plane but not nearly as much to modern combat fighters (thanks to advancements in jamming technology and the SA-2s terrible lack of mobility). There are many factors that decide how dangerous a SAM system is including its range, overal technology, geography, command & control, the opposing combat aircraft.

I didn't mean Iranian medium range missiles won't work. Will Iran's enemy use planes of 70's or 80's era against Iran? No,everybody knows that very well.Having longer range missile means one has the ability to face off any threat regardless whatever aircraft it is.See why UAE is going to procure THAAD missile?

Is currently available medium range missiles are reliable enough to give 100% security?Regarding S-200, USA , ISRAEL knows its way of functioning very well and can adopt counter measures against it.That is its main weakness.

Russia might lose heavily for scrapping Iran defence contract

Moscow: Russia might have to pay a heavy price for scrapping its S-300 air defence missiles deal with Iran, frozen after the fresh UN Security Council, with the penalty for breaching the contract put at USD 400 million.

In addition, Iran could refuse to buy any more military products from Russia following this, resulting in an estimated annual loss of up to USD 500 million, a report warned today.

"The S-300 contract is worth some USD 800 million, while Russian experts estimate the penalty for breach of contract at USD 400 million," a report in the Nezavisimaya Gazeta paper said today, further pointing out that Tehran could turn to China for arms supplies, depriving Moscow a serious source of revenue.

Following the fresh UNSC sanctions slapped on Tehran on June 9 under US pressure, Moscow said it would freeze the delivery of S-300 missiles, an older Russian equivalent of US Patriot missiles.

Although the Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko underscored that the new sanctions do not cover the sale of defensive weapons to Iran, but experts from the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation -- the nodal watchdog for foreign arms supplies -- concluded that the missiles did come under the new set of sanctions.

However, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the final decision in this regard has to be taken by President Dmitry Medvedev.

Moscow signed a contract on supplying Iran with at least five S-300 systems in December 2005, but nothing has been delivered.

The United States and Israel have urged Russia not to fulfil the contract, RIA Novosti reported.

The advanced version of the S-300 missile system, called S-300PMU1, has a range of over 150 kilometres (over 100 miles) and can intercept ballistic missiles and aircraft at low and high altitudes, making it effective in warding off air strikes.

Nezavisimaya Gazeta cautioned that Iran could refuse to buy any more military products from Russia, resulting in an estimated annual loss of up to USD 500 million.

Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Wahidi last week warned that Russia would be responsible for the consequences of its failure to deliver S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran.

Earlier in June, Iran banned its airlines from using Russian-built Tupolev Tu-154 airliners on domestic and international routes.

In addition, there have been reports of the imminent deportation of Russian pilots because the Islamic Republic already has "enough qualified flight personnel".

Russia's refusal to deliver S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran means Tehran could turn to China as its main arms supplier, depriving Moscow of a serious source of revenue, a Russian daily suggested on Wednesday.

Moscow said in mid-June it would freeze the delivery of S-300 air-defense systems following a new round of UN sanctions imposed on Tehran on June 9. Security Council Resolution 1929 imposed a fourth set of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, including tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo.

According to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Russia's losses will amount to the value of the contract plus penalties for breach of contract.

The S-300 contract is worth some $800 million, while Russian experts estimate the penalty for breach of contract at $400 million.

Furthermore, Iran could refuse to buy any more military products from Russia, leading to an estimated loss of $300 million to $500 million a year.

In another indication of a trend that should be worrying to Moscow, experts pointed to Iran's decision to effectively end cooperation with Russia in the civil aviation sector.

Earlier in June, Iran banned its airlines from using Russian-built Tu-154 airliners on domestic and international routes. In addition, there have been reports of the imminent deportation of Russian pilots because the Islamic Republic already has "enough qualified flight personnel."

Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi warned on June 22 that Russia would be responsible for the consequences of its failure to deliver S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran.

Russia initially said the delivery of S-300 systems to Iran would not be affected by the new UN sanctions since they are not included in the UN Register of Conventional Arms, but experts from the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation concluded the missiles did come under the new set of sanctions.

Russia may lose billions for breaching missile contract with Iran

A Kremlin source echoed that opinion on June 11, while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it was up to the president to make the final decision.

Moscow signed a contract on supplying Iran with at least five S-300 systems in December 2005, but nothing has been delivered. The United States and Israel have urged Russia not to fulfill the contract.

The advanced version of the S-300 missile system, called S-300PMU1, has a range of over 150 kilometers (over 100 miles) and can intercept ballistic missiles and aircraft at low and high altitudes, making it effective in warding off airstrikes.

I am a bit puzzled by this since Iran has imported anything military from Russia since the TORM1 several years ago..And that was the first major contract in many years (since the mid-late 90's). So to me it just seems that the military relationship between Russia and Iran is reverting to what it was in the '90s when the US convinced Russia to end sales to Iran.

Iran to design long-range missiles

After Russia's controversial decision to freeze the delivery of S-300 defense systems, Iran unveils efforts aimed at self-sufficiency in passive air defense.

"At present, Iran is on the path to designing long-range missiles used in passive air defense," Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told Mehr News Agency on Thursday.

In wake of fresh UN Security Council sanctions imposed against Iran in June over its nuclear program, Russia U-turned on an earlier assurance that the new resolution would not affect the deal.

The decision, as well as the Kremlin's "Yes" vote to the US-drafted sanctions resolution, drew sharp criticism from Iranian officials.

Tehran has warned Moscow -- a longtime trade and energy partner that helped build its southern Bushehr nuclear reactor -- that the sanctions are no excuse for reneging on the deal.

Earlier on Thursday, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Ali Larijani stressed that the new UNSC measure would have no bearing on the delivery, as the contract had been penned well before the sanctions.

Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily on Wednesday estimated Moscow's losses in breaching the contract to be over $1 billion, including a $400-million penalty likely imposed by Tehran.

The US and its European allies have embraced the "costly" Russian move, after convincing the veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council to join Washington's sanctions campaign.

The Obama administration is seeking to pressure the Islamic Republic into halting its enrichment activities, a demand that Tehran argues has no legal grounds.

Iran rejects Western accusations that its nuclear program harbors a clandestine military aspect, arguing that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) it has the right to civilian nuclear energy.

this has probably been discussed before but how good is the s 300 any way? i know what ever the case may be it will be a huge improvement to irans air defense but am just wondering is it really that good or is it largely hype?

Ive read somewhere that the Russians are planning to sell arms worth 1Bn to Yemen. If so, then perhaps US have helped Russia sell its weapons to third-parties(more like puppets) as a way to get Russia to change their attitude and relation with Iran.

Vladimir Putin and Ali Abdullah Saleh

Quote
Russia and Yemen could sign an arms contract worth over $1 billion, an international arms expert said on Thursday.

A Yemeni delegation led by President Ali Abdullah Saleh discussed sales of Russian arms to the Arab republic on Wednesday during the leader's short visit to Moscow.

Igor Korotchenko, head of a Moscow-based think tank on the international arms trade, said Yemen "is interested in a very broad range of Russian arms and military equipment," especially MiG-29 SMT jet fighters (up to 30), Mi-35 and Ka-52 helicopter gunships and Mi-17 military transport helicopters.

He said Saleh's wish list also included T-72M1 tanks, Kornet E antitank complexes, Smerch multiple launch rocket systems (up to 20 units), and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles.

"In addition, Yemen is interested in building an air-defense system with [Russian made] S-300MPU and S-300 PMU1 surface-to-air missile complexes," Korotchenko said.

He said Yemen would also like to modernize the weaponry it bought from the Soviet Union, including BRDM-2 armored reconnaissance vehicles, whose number currently exceeds 1,000.

Furthermore, he said, Yemen needs warships, in particular high-speed patrol boats, to fight piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

I HAVE ONLY ONE QUESTION TO ALL READERS OF THIS FORUM.

WHY IRAN IS SO COMPELLED TO BUY S-300 FROM COWARD RUSSIA.DOESN'T IRAN POSSESS THE CAPABILITY TO BUILD A NEW AIR DEFENSE OF ITS OWN?

In my opinion the primary reason Iran is compelled to buy the S-300 is to take a look at the latest Russian technology she can get her hands on, and reverse engineer its subsystems.  This is the fastest and cheapest way for Iran to absorb Russian high tech in to her military industrial compex.

Yemen is the second poorest country after Mauritania in arab world and look how much they spend for weapons which could be described mostly as modern.

This is great example of how arab leaders look at their people and no matter how poor they are they have to buy modern weapons to protect their thrones.

Saleh is buying weapons as if he is going to get into a war.

Russian official: Iran won't get our missiles

Military official says Moscow will not supply Iran with 'large missile systems' due to UN sanctions

Associated Press Published: 07.20.10, 17:52 / Israel News

Russia's Interfax news agency cites a top military official as saying the UN's latest Iran sanctions, which Moscow has backed, rule out the delivery of missile systems.

Russia has yet to fulfill a 2007 contract with Iran over the delivery of the sophisticated S-300 defense missiles. The West has urged against arming a state suspected of running a covert nuclear weapons program.

Military official Alexander Fomin on Tuesday did not directly identify the S-300s, but pledged Moscow would desist from supplying "large missile systems" in accordance with the sanctions, Interfax reported.

It is the latest indication that the deal is dead. Last month, the Russian government said the sanctions blocked the missile sale, but Iran insisted the restrictions don't cover existing contracts.

They have for sometime. They actually control the Russian government as well as Germany and France. Just a few countries that are controlled by Zionists. They control the majority of world governments.

Iran should buy their hardware from some other nation and at the same time the national arms industry should do what they can to get the know-how to make all the parts to these weapon systems and even engineer and fabricate better ones for future. I know its easier said than done, but there should be huge efforts for better and more efficient defense of Iran and her sovereignty.
