Salam,

Azaraksh, Saegeh, Shafagh were names circulating in the mass media quite a few years ago. I wonder if anybody knows they have been inducted in the IRIAF.

For the first two its unknown, it was promised we'd see a squadron of Saeqeh's that have been adopted, but that hasn't materialized. It is assumed however that the four we have seen are in service because they took part in the milad-e nour wargames. The Shafaq does not even have a full-sized prototype built yet. However there are a number of other trainers like the Simorgh and the Tazarv that have entered service with the IRIAF

Above and Below: HESA's Iran-140 in the percieved AWACS role. Antonov An-140 military AEW version will be equipped with a rotodome and a yet to be determined surveillance radar. Iran has an urgent requirement for at least a dozen of such aircraft due to its diverse topography!

Could it be just that the list of inducted aircrafts are not made public?

If so, it may be a good move on IRIAF's part.

How would you rate Saeqeh and Azarakh based on their public specifications, speaking of which I would love to know if you have access to any reliable, original Iranian source for such information.

The Azarashk is an F 5A converted to an F 5E and the Saeqeh is essentially an F 5E with a better radar and a v shaped tail and stronger wing so that it can carry Precision guided munitions. No one knows whether they're entirely Iranian made or whether they are just upgraded F 5Es already in Iran's inventory.

They are not made to be superiority fighters, they are just light ground attack fighters with the ability to carry the 2000lb smart bomb. I think that they are test beds for Iran's main fighter project.

This was the original plan.  However, Iran-140 has had a dismal performance since it was first produced.  I am not sure if the experts in Iran believe that it is worth placing millions of dollars in high tech equipment in a plane with such a questionable record.  On top of this, if you add that rotadome to this plane, I am not sure how it will influence its aerodynamics.

I would think that they may wait untill they can produce the An-148 and probably adopt that one for the AEW role.

Did that deal go through?

Also, the deal for the An 140 went through ages ago, i think that at the very least, Iran will make the An-148 in 6 years time.

the An-148 is a better canidate for a Awacs i think because its jet powered and more modern than the An-140 when we start building the AN-148 in Iran

All of us have seen the reports about the deal.  The problem is that we don't know which of many ventures that Iran gets involved with actually materialize on time.

And on top of that, Iranian Media has a habiit of reporting things that aren't true.

It is funny, ten minutes prior to reading your post, i was on an Iranian subforum on skyscrapers.com and there were tens of threads about development projects in Iran. The first posts were in 2005/6 and all of them said that they would be finished within a couple of years. The last posts in 2008/9 also said that they'd be finished within a couple of years as well  ;)

It seems Iran is a good candidate for external cooperation with capable partners both in civilian and military fields, many Muslim majority countries can perhaps fit that description.
