At beginning of the revolution Iran had 5000 full time pilots and they were going to add 100pilots/month with the purchase of 300 F-16 but since the F-16 deal was canceled and some of the pilots were considered anti-revolution some were killed and imprisoned. A few left Iran but just a handful. Later on the IRI regime realized they desperately are in need of real experienced pilots they let the imprisoned ones take part in the war and so was this a right decision because a lots of young F-4 pilots were getting shot down only because of lack of experience. No one knows exactly how many pilots Iran had but with an arsenal of 230+ F-4, 166+ F-5, 79 F-14, 202 Cobras, and 95 CH-47 I'd say Iran had about 4900 pilots (my personal estimation based on pilots killed during the revolution, fled, retired and imprisoned)

persiankid2211-jan, I just wanted to make sure you are aware that 'nezamkhan' is not a very reliable source of information.  I suggest, you search this forum and you will find your answer.  Perhaps, one of our specialists will respond as well.

Mamdali

PS:  Read excellent content from 'Eagle2009' and 'Ayyash'.  There are also various other members that have good content and research and usually engage and exchange with 'Eagle2009' and 'Ayyash'.  They are interesting to follow as well.

(Note:  I hope I'm being redundant by saying that given the state of misinformation and factless and unsupported content that is rife on the 'internet' today, naturally, I cannot endorse, believe, support, or accept any of links posted by me or others.  I personally find them interesting, however, as they open new perspectives for me.  I leave it to the reader to glean what they can or want from them).

Persiankid2211,

I would suggest you visit the ACIG (Air Combat Information Group) run by Tom Cooper. He has writtens several very good books on the IRIAF, especially during the Iran-Iraq War. On his site I believe he does have a list of Iraqi and Iranian Air to Air Victories from the war for which you could use to determine number of F-14 kills during the war. See links below:

To Persiankid2211: if you count the number of victories by Iranian F-14 by going through those two links that were provided by Eagle2009...you'll see it's exactly the same numbers I've posted!
That should tell you something about the reliability of my information...

Nezamkhan-jan, you claimed you aided and abetted in a MURDER (link below).  You are currently persona non grata.  We don't take kindly to your ilk of traitors and criminals on this forum.  You need to address this comment of yours and clear it up publicly to our satisfaction.  You'll be surprised how forgiving we can be.  Otherwise, this quote will continue to follow you across the forum.

Thanks!

Mamdali

Well, I am sure Iranians did not do such a thing for one reason $$$ killing 180 pilots is pretty expensive, unless they were able to lure them all out at once and blow them up at the same time..but some one talked about Iraqis living in Iran working for CIA etc....no most CIA agents in Iran are Iranian women, Turkish women, Kurdish man and women, Afghani man, and Tajik man&women. But the greatest number are Iranian women....very sad and unfortunately true. How I know...well when I was in the army one year before the war ended I was stationed in Esfahan before being shipped to the fronts, I was at the SAVAMA headquarters acting as prison guard...I remember an interrogation of an Iranian women by SAVAMA when she did not give up info after hours of interrogation a soldier from Sepah walked toward her and he shoved the metal cleaner of AK-47 all the way deep into her ear and killed her...that was before I was stationed at front...I did not see the act in person but I was outside the interrogation room, when they opened the door and intell officer walked out I could see her dead buddy....so sad...I could and have never understood why?

The Short answer is: Who knows?

Obviously for age reasons its not likely any of Iran's aces from the Iran-Iraq war are still active fighter pilots and if there are they are likely quite few. If they survived the war and the purges, its likely many of them became instructors for today's pilots but since Iran has not been in any aerial combat since the Iran-Iraq war there can not have been any 'new' aces since.
