Iranian F-7

I did a search and couldn't find any F-7 info, I know I've seen a recent picture of a trainer FT-7 on the forum ...
so i decided to add a F-7 thread

5th Tactical Air Base
Omidiyeh (OIAJ)
Rwy: 12R/30L
Pos: 30°50'07"N 049°32'06"E
Elev: 85 ft

This Air Base was due to be transferred completely to the Iranian Revulutionary Guard Corps Air Force (IRGCAF) in 2008 and the F-7s transferred to Esfahan since mid-2008. In March 2009 however, the Chinese licence built MiG-21's returned to Omidiyeh, forming three squadrons again.

Squadron     Aircraft Type(s)

51 TFS        F-7M
                 FT-7N
52 TFS        F-7M
                 FT-7N
53 TFS        F-7M
                 FT-7N

original got around 60 F-7 type aircraft back in the day...  estimates around mid 20s now operational... who know what the actual numbers are...

The Chinese-built Chengdu F-7 Thunderbolt is still widely used in Iran. Some of the dual-seat FT-7N trainer versions are painted in a very colourful manner.

Note the one pictured is listed as a F-7M in database not a FT-7N trainer...

all info from google searches and scramble website...

anyone have better info or pictures?  Thanks in advance...    :)
Respectfully,
Simple Bubba

Peace to You and Yours...

The first one is actually in Italy as one that was going to be transferred to Iran, but was canceled.

Also, notice the ones dressed up as Iraqi MiG's

2 F-7Ns at Mehrabad Airport/Airbase (two very different paint schemes as well)..

Why is the front like what exactly? Having a nose-mounted intake was quite common when the original MiG-21 was designed, and that is what the F-7 is based on. Its actually a very efficient design when it comes to airflow, speed, and overall performance. The main problem is it limits the size of the radar fitted in the small radome, which was a big problem when the plane was first introduced by in today's world of advanced avionics, you can actually fit a pretty decent radar on them.

Great pics.

Notice the PL-7s and drag/retarded bombs..

On a funny sidenote, according to most sites the Chinese never exported the PL-7 lol..

My old man worked with these for a very brief period and he did not like them at all. And this was ages ago... imagine their state now. :/

The last reports I read on the IRIAF's F-7s was they are primarily used for fighter training and that's about it.

Considering their limited combat value today (and the day they were built for that matter), this is probably for the better.

Which is kinda depressing to me since I am generally a fan of the entire MiG-21 family but I have read nothing but terrible reports about Iran's experience with the F-7Ns. Oddly enough you don't read alot of such reports from Pakistan who imported a number of similar aircraft (then imported two improved variants over the years) however that likely has something to do with Pakistan not wanting to trash the aircraft built by their major military and strategic benefactor. Then again, Pakistan made it very clear after they imported the first F-7Ps (largely identical to the F-7N except with western avionics which could not be fitted to Iranian F-7Ns) that they wanted improvements made which came in the form of the F-7MP Skybolt which has much improved avionics.

These are the worst aicrafts Iran could ever acquire... If course, they'll soon be unneeded as the Saegheh comes out in more and more squadrons

The last picture is very much like photos I see from Chinese AF, pilots lined up next to their aircrafts!

I guess depending where we import the jets from some such culture also enters the IRIAF!

On the other note, I count 23 in the first photo. Could this be the whole stock?

Karach,

In theory anyway, still no evidence of anymore than the 5 confirmed airframes still wearing non-combat paint schemes. This also assumes that they trully mean to mass produce the aircraft which is still debated.

Catsoo,

One does wonder because I remember a very old picture of the F-7s when they first delivered and I believe it too had 23 visible aircraft, which suggests the ~24 figure that often floats around concerning the F-7s is probably the most accurate.

I find it interesting that all these images are of FT-7 combat trainers and not the F-7N fighter.

Just imagine what those Iranian pilots thought upon receiving the F-7 Airguard series after flying the creme of American military aircraft.

I point this out to Chinese military aviation observers and buffs, and they actually get insulted! Then I point out Iranian pilots felt the same sentiment (but not as bad) towards the MiG-29A types they acquired, which later prompted them to exclaim "Na doost!" to the Su-27 and MiG-31 as they knew full well the losses they'd take flying such second-rate aircraft against the USA. Big waste of money and good pilots (as experienced by Iraq from '80 to '88). Better to put the effort into an indigenous ballistic missile program, which lately is funny as certain US military observers are unwittingly advocating Taiwan pursue just such a deterrent-based defense in lieu of no forthcoming F-16s!
