I have always considered the Tazarv/Dorna jet trainer the true representation of Iran's Aviation industry..A completed design, plenty of prototypes, cheap construction, available engine, but yet no production. I have never quite understood why this design hasnt entered production. It's airframe is predominately Fiberglass which is cheaper to build and assemble than traditional aluminum airframe...Its not like the engine isnt available (one of the problems with the Shafagh)...Lack of funds has always been a big problem with Iran's military aviation industry, but the Tazarv is supposely quite cheap (claimed to be $2million apiece), so building a small fleet over say a 5 year period shouldnt very expensive (say 5 aircraft a year, $10 million per year)..I just dont see the logic. Thoughts?

There seem to be 4-6 Tazarve around with one having an accident a while ago. There are rumors that they are grounded since then.

And there are at least 2 different configurations too among those Pre-production aircraft (slightly different tail and intakes)..One wonders what could have the cause of the accident that they would decide to ground the whole fleet? Its not like these planes are terribly complicated..They have fiberglass construction, mechanical flight controls and highly reliable J85 engines..

The J-85 is a single-shaft turbojet engine designed and manufactured by General Electric (USA). It is one of GE's most successful engines allowing for an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio. Amongst other aircraft, they were used to power the Northrop F-5 which were ordered in large numbers by Iran.

"My Lord, grant me success in struggling during failure, in having patience in disappointment, in going alone, in Jihad without weapons, in working without pay, in making sacrifice in silence, in having religious belief in the world, in having ideology without popular traditions, in having faith without pretensions, non-conformity without immaturity, beauty without physical appearance, loneliness in the crowd, and loving without the beloved knowing about it. My Lord, You teach me how to live; I shall learn how to die."

Whether Iran producing its own version of the J85 is not entirely certain though I think its very likely. The only problem I see is the how much expertise Iran has working with Titanium, which is what the engine blades are made from..Titanium is not cheap and needs special machinery to properly manipulate it.

It was a very tough challenge when Iran started manufacturing the gas turbine blades during the war. They worked
slow. Initially they had terrible experiences. The first blades were shattering at low RPM in seconds. But slowly they attained quality exceeding US made blades. That is what is going into Iranian fighter jet engines and even commercial planes today. Thanks to IAI engineers.

Thanks for the reply guys. Much appreciated. Does anyone know whether if it's possible to go vectoring on the J85 engine? Could this possible be the engine Iran might use on it's third generation fighters? Does anyone have any info on the Morghue?

They have invested a great deal of efforts in alloy chemistry which is a challenge. Up until 2 years ago they did not build Local machinery/tooling capable of manufacturing 100% of the locally built Turbines. However it is believed that they took delivery of these local toolings a year ago.

Double-seater belonging to the Initiatory Training Group of Iranian Air Force Pilot School in Doshan Teppeh in 1947. This unarmed plane is entirely painted with silver colour. Note: roundels mistakenly inverted.
