Impera,

How many Russians aircrafts and types were escorted? Also, could you add the link to the source of these images?

I am also wondering if similar photos taken by IRIAF pilots has appeared anywhere?

I want to point out what those F-14s are carrying under their fuselage - AIM-7s. There's been some discussion here before about the state of Iran's AIM-7s but we never came to any definitive conclusions one way or another on how or if Iran arming their aircraft with Sparrows.

Excellent photos!

True, but the majority of pictures of them that we had seen were from publicity events. Imagery from genuine escort operations (or CAP, or other interactions between aircraft) such as this one is always so much more valuable because it reduces the possibility of deception operations. I wouldn't go anywhere close to as far as saying that this is the only evidence we have of the IRIAF's use of AIM-7s, but it's definitely among the top in terms of overall quality.

Iranian Air Force Equips F-14 Fighter Jets with Hi-Tech Radars

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force has equipped all its F-14 fighter jets with highly advanced radars, Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army Rear Admiral Farhad Amiri announced on Sunday.

"The radar system of these fighters are highly complicated because it consists of a set of separated parts which should be linked to each other when they are mounted on the fighter jet, and this is a very complex scientific and technological process," Amiri told FNA.

"Our radars used to be mainly American and British in the past and these were the Americans and the British who determined the place for mounting our radar systems and they were, thus, fully informed of their blind spots," he said.

"But today that we produce all our radar systems domestically, we ourselves specify the place where these systems should be mounted and installed," the senior Army official said, and added, "And we cover the blind spots with other systems."

Iranian officials have announced that the country has now reached self-sufficiency in producing radar systems in different frequencies and for various ranges.

Also, Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani announced in November that the country's experts are boosting the range of home-made air defense radar systems to 3000km.

"Iran is working on a radar system that can cover areas within a range of 3,000 km," Miqani said, adding that the system will enable the country to identify all flying objects around the country.

A senior Iranian Air Defense commander also said in October that Iran's radar systems can detect all flying objects in the entire region, even in the Persian Gulf littoral states.

"In addition to the Southern borders and waters, all Persian Gulf littoral states are under the cover of the radars of the Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base," Commander of the Air Defense Unit of Southeastern Iran General Habibollah Alizadeh told FNA at the time.

Referring to the production of radar equipment and instruments inside the country, he said that Iran has gained self-sufficiency in producing radar systems and it is no more dependant on any foreign country in this ground.

Iran Uses F-14 Squadrons for Air Defense

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran uses its F-14 fighter jets for air-defense missions, a senior Iranian air defense commander said, adding that the aircraft has gone under a relevant set of tests in air drills in Northwestern Iran.

Speaking to FNA, Deputy Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base for Inspection Colonel Abolfazl Farmahini said that F-14 fighter jets participated in the 'Fadaeeyan-e Harim-e Vellayat III' air drills as part of the country's integrated air defense plan, "and that's why they are operating under the Khatam ol-Anbia base".

"These planes are used as part of a mobile aerial weapon in an integrated air defense network, given the specific defense conditions and techniques and tactics in battlefield," Farmahini stated.

The commander further noted that Iran's F-14 fighters have been equipped with modern cannons and missile systems to be able to push back any kind of aggressive plane.

The large offensive air drills took place in Northwestern Iran.

Different tests on plane equipments, ammunitions and tactics are underway in several phases of the 10-day exercises.

An array of fighter jets, fighter bombers, cargo and transportation planes, including F-4, F-5, Sukhoi SU-24 fighter-bombers, Mig-29 and the logistic C-130 planes, and the home-made Saeqeh fighter jets carried out missions in those drills.

I have an article in Farsi about 2008 that the IRIAF commander claimed that Iranian F-14s are basically new aircraft looking like the F-14 A. All their systems including powerplants have been upgraded or have totally new systems.

The news here is consistent with the 2008 claim.

Does he mean Cannons of current F-14 are new?
F-14 uses M61 Vulcan Gatling, This is the same Gatling that is used on Phalanx CIWS system.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) said that it currently possesses a new generation of F-14 fighter aircraft with domestically-built radars and refurbished engines.

According to Press TV, the Iranian fleet of Grumman F-14 Tomcat aircraft was purchased from the United States during the reign of the deposed dictator, Shah.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the US has placed an arms embargo on Iran, which includes the sale of new F-14 aircraft to the country.

Aziz Nasirzadeh, a top IRIAF official, described the current Iranian fleet of F-14 as “completely overhauled” aircraft.

He also said the aircraft have been improved so that they are now equipped with a new generation of bombers that could not be
installed before.

The US announced in January 2007 that sales of spare parts for F-14s would be suspended due to concerns that they could end up in Iran.

Nasirzadeh said Iran was now capable of producing radars for the F-14s and improving the aircraft's engine without dependence on imports.

He added that Iran was now moving on the road to “independence” in producing aircraft parts as the country does not expect foreign countries to provide it with needed supplies.

Iran’s air force deputy commander Aziz Nasirzadeh to Iran on Tuesday, local media said that the current F-14 “Tomcat” fighter jets

have been equipped with Iranian-made radar and new engines. Aziz Nasirzadeh said, although most of the aircraft,

“the old design,” but including aircraft systems, including all parts are currently carrying out the optimization and upgrading. Iran

bombers equipped with a “weighing 900 kg ‘messenger’ laser-guided bombs,” and this bomb in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea has

successfully test-fired.

The Iranian fleet of Grumman F-14 Tomcat aircraft was purchased from the United States during the late 1970's. Iran received 79 jets

and used them extensively in the war with Iraq, losing only a few and achieving a kill ratio of 1:6. IRIAF started the

F-14A upgrade program in 2002 under project Khorshid. The current fleet with over 50 operational jets boasts Iranian made Fatter (AIM 9X) and Phoenix AIM 54 BVR missiles.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the US has placed an arms embargo on Iran, which includes the sale of new F-14 aircraft to the country.

Aziz Nasirzadeh, a top IRIAF official said the aircraft have been improved so that they now own a new generation of bombers which

could not be installed before. The fleet life has been prolonged to well beyond 2020.

I convinced the right F-14 really carries two AIM-54's under fuselage, By using Photo Zoom pro (to retain quality of image after zooming in) and Zooming in on left and right F-14,and comparing these two F-14's, Its possible to identify right hand F-14 carries AIM-54's when you compared it with left F-14 that carries Sparrow under fuselage.

I am not sure if this is the right thread but I did not know where to put it. So, this is a well known photo of an Iranian F-14 Squadron roster, however the pilots depicted are still unknown. Any idea who are they?
