This can be very beneficial in Iranian mountainous terrain! If they position certain vertical take off jets in strategic locations, in case of an air strike, these jets can lift off without the enemy being aware and can catch them off guard.

Of course i'm not military expert and don't know if its a plausible thought or not, but i imagine it can be.

Sure. Put some fortified airplane-bunker deep into the mountains, just with a little place in front of the door for take of.

Maybe Iranian officials are really studying using small Aircraft Carriers.
Carriers like Spanish Juan Carlos warship class is suitable for Iran, but long time is needed to build such warships and equip it.

Iran Eying Manufacture of Vertical Climb Aircraft

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian Air Force commander announced that the country's defense industries has started research for manufacturing vertical climb aircraft with straight vertical flight.

"Studies are underway at the Defense Industries" for manufacturing this type of aircraft," Lieutenant Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) for Coordination Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh told reporters.

Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony here in Tehran on Wednesday, the commander stressed that IRIAF is now meeting its operational needs through constant interaction with research centers.

He underscored Air Force's preparedness to defend the country, and noted that the Air Force has already been equipped with the new generations of aircraft.

"We now possess new generations of aircraft, but we continue updating their electronic warfare, radars and smart ammunition," Nasirzadeh added.

The Iranian Air Force tested its defense capabilities in massive air drills, dubbed as 'Fadaeeyan-e Harim-e Vellayat III', in Iran's Northwestern regions.

During the exercises which started on September 6, the Iranian Air Force fighter jets practiced electronic war operations and Iran's two well-known home-made fighter jets, namely Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) and Azarakhsh (Lightening) staged successful missions and bombed the specified targets under full radio silence.

Saeqeh and Azarakhsh were among the several squadrons of the Iranian Air Force fighter jets which conducted night raids on fixed and mobile targets under complete radio silence.

Different plane equipments, ammunitions and tactics went under test in the four phases of the exercises codenamed 'Fadaeeyan-e Harim-e Vellayat III'.

An array of fighter jets, fighter bombers, cargo and transportation planes, including F-4, F-5, Sukhoi-24 (SU-24) fighter-bombers, Mig-29 and the logistic C-130 planes, were used in the exercises.

I have a vague memory of us talking about a "Bavar' aircraft (separate from the Bavar WIG) a few months ago that was supposed to incorporate VTOL capability, does anyone remember that or did I completely imagine that? I seem to remember it was a transport aircraft rather then a fighter though. I think it was advertised as unmanned as well.

---

There was a discussion over at IDF back when Iran supposedly announced their intent to produce aircraft carriers concerning information that had been given to one of the members (Croation) supposedly by students at a military college who were studying the feasibility of the proposal. Some of the information included designs for a carrier with approximately the same displacement as the Juan Carlos. Personally, I'm extremely dubious about the authenticity of the "information" and I'd bet that there's an 80% it's entirely disinformation, but then again ,theres always that 20%, and taken in conjunction with this latest bit of info...

Another explanation might be, as YMJ suggests, it's a design optimized for the same strategy used by the Swedish air-force - the ability to takeoff from remote, unimproved surfaces without the need for extensive airbase support which can be easily targeted by an enemies superior air-power (aka the U.S.) Although I have to say, it really seems like VTOL would require significantly more complexity then a STOL which would be important if we're talking about a protracted conflict from remote locations. I'm also not sure Iran's geography is really suited for the exact same strategy; in fact, undeground shelters would indeed be the only way Iran would reliably disperse their fighters across the country.

Why do some Iranian general make such bombastic statements when it's clear this statement is only just a that - a statement. The fighterjet program is going nowhere, the bavar air - defence system, which was promised is nowhere. What I don't get is, why bother saying it if it's not ready or there???

Confronting with the current threat by the Nato, Iran will never invest money in such expensive systems like aircraft carriers and so on.

For the same ressources they could build thousands of anti ship/aircraft missiles.

p.s. Today I experienced that my uncle worked for the iranian military as a sartip...

What use is this if you have an advanced UAV programme, ditch the traditional fighters.

Might as well build more missile silos than vertical take-off planes.

Yes! And additional this one:

"    Abstract
    References (13)
    Article Objects (3)
    Related Content

We demonstrate broadband, near perfect absorption with a conformal coating of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) forest on an arbitrarily shaped surface. The complex refractive index of such a CNT forest is retrieved from the measured transmission and reflection spectra using Kramers-Kronig constrained variational analysis, which gives a typical value of neff = 1.04 + 0.01i at visible wavelengths. Therefore, when used as a conformal coating on an object, a thick layer of the CNT forest can provide an excellent impedance match to air and near perfect absorption, preventing any detectable light reflection and scattering from the object."

Reza brother,

They make statements for a specific reason's and don't think for a second our "fighter jet program is going no where".

What you see, literally is only the tip of the iceberg, in all forms of technology being displayed. The mass production of fighter jets are not going to take place until a perfect design is agreed upon and the different fighter jets that are going to be needed.

In the few summers i have been in Iran traveling, the only thing i keep thinking of is vertical take off fighters. The mountanous areas in Iran are just perfect for keeping fighter jets on standby just for an ambush. You can bait in enemy fighters to certain areas where VTOFA can ambush them.

Anyway, i understand your frustration and feel the same way, regarding announcements. I wish they would make no announcements at all, considering those who will understand what is happening already do, and those that don't, announcements wont make a difference. Having said that, i'm sure there is a reason to every announcement they make, there are intended consequences which are thought of by our leaders when these announcements are made.
