Omani Commander Visits Iranian Air Force Overhaul Center

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of Oman's Royal Air Force Major General Yahya bin Rashed al-Jomeh, who is in Tehran on an official visit, toured the main overhaul center of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) on Monday.

Rashed al-Jomeh was accompanied by Lieutenant Commander of the IRIAF for Coordination Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh during the visit to Mehrabad Air Base Overhaul Center.

Iran overhauls different types of fighter jets, cargo planes and passenger planes, including Mig-29, F-4, C-130 and Boeing-747.

The Omani air force commander is due to confer with top Iranian military commanders to exchange views on ways of bolstering mutual cooperation and discuss other issues of mutual interest.

During the visit to Tehran, bin Rashed is slated to attend meetings with Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Seyed Hassan Firouzabadi, Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi and several other top commanders of the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Over the last few years, Iran and Oman have expanded military ties and cooperation specially over security in the Persian Gulf.

The two countries signed a security agreement in August 2009.

Later in August 2010, the two Persian Gulf states signed an agreement to further boost mutual cooperation in the field of defense.

In December, the Iranian parliament approved a bill that allows Tehran to implement an agreement on security cooperation and coordination with Oman.

This is the first time we see photos of behind the scene operations in IRIAF overhaul operations. They are actually manufacturing frames. This is not an overhaul operations it is an aircraft manufacturing operations in low volume.

Simply impressive!

This is a lame observation, and I apologize for bringing it up, but the Air Force seems to employ the largest Iranians. They don't even look athletic, just body-builder-huge....

Barberry,

Those IRIAF security types are analogous to the USAF security forces (I remember them as "the Blue Berets").

I have to say, Iran might have the most self-resourced classic plane restoration service in the world!

Catsoo,

I don't think it technically counts as production unless 100% of the airframe is newly built. I don't see any evidence of that in these images. I do see clear evidence of massively extensive overhauls in which a huge portion of the aircraft is newly built. To me this makes sense since it could be simpler and cheaper to perform massive overhauls on existing airframes instead of being completely new-built airframes.

I could be wrong of course, and in the pursuit of proving myself wrong, I have two images that I have serious questions about.

One, is the final image in the gallery that shows officials walking by what appear to be newly built airframe sections, question is, what part of the airframe as they supposed to be and from what aircraft?

Secondly, this image of a MiG-29 nose-section. Is it me, or this the first piece of evidence that Iran has indeed mounted refueling probes to their MiG-29s are reported years ago? (look at the right side of the nose-section under the cockpit).

I want to say it looks like the rear portion of the engine housing on an F-4 where it begins to taper downward, can't say for sure though.

I believe that is a pitot tube for taking air-speed readings.

I can't really tell to be honest. I can't really "place" it as any particular portion from the F-5 airframe if it was.

Great images Lur!

This picture particularly interests me..

To me, it looks to be sections of a F-5Es airframe, including what look like its intakes. Compare it to this cutaway image of a F-5E.

Thanks Eagle, Can you tell if its new or refurbished parts?  Also can you tell if its made out of the same material as the original F-5E if it is new build or is it made from composite material?
