There was an article i watched that showed an Iranian UAV spying on the US gulf fleet. If only  hundreds of these were made for attacking the fleet.

Iran to Mass-Produce New UAVs

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced on Sunday that his forces plan to mass-produce a new home-made Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) tested during the current wargames in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the last stage of IRGC naval exercises, codenamed as Payambar-e Azam (The Great Messenger) 5 in Iran's southern waters today, Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said that the new UAV (Pahpad) will be mass-produced in the near future.

"In addition to reconnaissance flight over the operation (battle) field, this kind of drone brings ease to battle command by transferring real-time data," Hajizadeh added.

Asked about the role of IRGC Aerospace Force in the latest wargames, the commander said that his forces provided the naval and ground forces with logistical supports.

He added that his forces were tasked with defending the Persian Gulf airspace during the military drills, while they were also in charge of electronic warfare, surface-to-air missile systems and artillery systems.

Tens of ground, air and naval units of the IRGC participated in the exercises which are aimed at preserving security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the strategic Persian Gulf waterway, is a major oil shipping route. An estimated 40 percent of the world's oil supply passes through the waterway.

A range of home-made missiles were test-fired during the wargames which experts say showed the IRGC's naval power.

Various kinds of short-range missiles were also fired during the military maneuver which saw its fourth and last stage today.

They should stop using the phrases "mass produce", "stealth", "radar evading" or "home made". The MoD needs to sort this out with these media stations because they're undermining their credibility. I listen to, and read what the generals actually say and it can be translated much better.

Something that has always bothered me as of late is why hasnt Iran equiped any of their UAVs with a Datalink antenna? For those without access to SATCOM its the next best thing and allows for much better operational range and control...Could it be because Iran's UAVs on average aren't very big and as such they cant build such an antenna so compact yet?

This is the kind of antenna I speak of:

I couldn't find the thread so i assumed there wasn't one. :)

Shouldn't this be in the air force thread though? The UAVs are owned by all of the branches and it would make sense to put them all in the air force thread for convenience.

UAV/UCAV are controlled by the land forces, not by the air forces.

Well the Navy also has UAV's and are you sure the Air force doesn't operate them as well?

Does anyone recognize the terrain in the moving map display.  The Latitude and Longitude are printed in the bar just beneath the map, but I can't make it out.  I can't seem to match that map up to anything I'm familiar with.

It is the north-east side of Hormoz strait:

You're right.  I think the lake is what originally threw me.  I didn't know there was a reservoir in that area.

  Iran-Made Choppers Start Operation

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian Army commander announced on Sunday that a number of sophisticated unmanned choppers newly designed and produced by the country's experts started operation for the Iranian military.

Commander of the Iranian Army Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said in an interview with FNA that the unmanned choppers have already been tasked with scouting and combat missions.

"Production of unmanned choppers for scouting missions, which can also be armed for combat missions, was carried out in the Army Ground Force and the choppers are used in different sections," Pourdastan mentioned.

"The choppers have already been tested and evaluated in different wargames," the commander continued.

The commander also noted that utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has now entered the literature of and become a routine for the Iranian Armed Forces.

Last week, a senior Iranian commander announced that the Air Force plans to form a battalion of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in all its bases across the country.

"In every Air Force fighters base, a UAV battalion will be formed," Lieutenant Commander of Iran's Air Force Mohsen Darrebaqi told FNA, adding, "These UAV battalions have already been formed in four bases."

Noting that the UAV units of the Air Force have been operative for as long as many years, Darrebaqi pointed out that these units are currently tasked with intelligence and information gathering and reconnaissance missions.

Iranian Army to Build Submarine-Controlled UAVs

Iranian Army to Build Submarine-Controlled UAVs

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian commander announced here on Tuesday that the country's Army plans to design and manufacture Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that can be controlled from submarines.

"Today the world is seeking UAVs that can be controlled from submarines, from sub-surface and from vessels' deck. And we, too, are mulling over such fields of activity as they can be achieved," Head of the Iranian Army's Self-Sufficiency Jihad and Industrial Researches (department) Admiral Mohammad Sadri said in an exclusive interview with FNA on Tuesday.

The commander said that Iran has already used the domestically built UAVs in sea missions to check its newly developed weapon systems and also for targeting purposes.

Pointing to the unique radar-evading capability of Iran-made UAVs and their small sizes, Sadri said Army's research and development centers are serious in the field.

"Thanks God, good work has been done in area of UAV production in (the Army's) ground and air divisions," Sadri noted.

Last week, Lieutenant Commander of Iran's Air Force Mohsen Darrebaqi told FNA that the Iranian Air Force plans to form a battalion of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in all its bases across the country.

"In every Air Force fighters base, a UAV battalion will be formed," Darrwbaqi said, adding, "These UAV battalions have already been formed in four bases."

Noting that the UAV units of the Air Force have been operative for as long as many years, Darrebaqi pointed out that these units are currently tasked with intelligence and information gathering and reconnaissance missions.

"But in future we want to use them for assault missions so that these UAVs can hit targets," he added.

Iran has recently made good progress in the air industry and has succeeded in gaining the technical know-how for producing stealth aircraft and drones.

The country in February inaugurated the production line of two home-made Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with bombing and reconnaissance capabilities.

The two hi-tech drones named 'Ra'd' (Thunder) and 'Nazir' (Harbinger) are capable of conducting long-range reconnaissance, patrolling, assault and bombing missions with high precision.

Ra'd which is a UAV of choice for assault and bombing missions has the capability to destroy the specified targets with high pinpoint precision.

Experts believe that once the UAV enters the scene of aerial missions, it would enhance the reconnaissance, patrolling and defensive power of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Force.

Iran successfully tested a home-made radar-evading UAV with bombing capabilities last June. Also in 2008, the country's Defense Industries launched production lines of two well-known home-made fighter jets, namely Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) and Azarakhsh (Lightening).

Iran had earlier started construction of a plant in the northern province of Mazandaran in 2008 to mass produce UAVs for different civilian and military missions.

This is genius!  A cheap small automated quiet helicopter with extremely low radar footprint with cheap GSM equipment to communicate location, speed and direction of the target in real time. Good luck to US to shoot down these invisible mosquitoes!

If this thing gets a lot of attention and be programmed with jumping frequencies and automated remote control shut off and automated follow the target until further encoded instruction received and more anti electronic warfare features there will be almost no counter weapon for these for a while!

I can imagine big bulky F-18 trying to first locate these mosquitoes with almost no radar help and then trying to shoot down them with machine guns!

Once the coordinates are known a few Noor missiles can finish the ship!

We will have live video steams as well. I think Iran should send many of these mosquitoes over US navy ships to see how these people deal with them. Just do not use mission frequencies and mission coding. Use trial out of the box encryptions first to start with the game.

I think that would be great deterrence if these videos are all over internet to show Americans how powerless their Navy ships are! US Navy ships are really sitting ducks in Persian Gulf!

That can stop a war!

Unless its a fairly decent sized drone its range prolly wouldn't be that great (depending on if it uses batteries or a real engine). Which would mean they would have to be fairly close the vessel they want to spy on which means they would be already detected by the vessel's radars. The American RQ-8 FireScout only has a combat radius of 110nm so anything smaller would logically have a shorter range. We'll have to wait and see how large this unmanned helos are but if it is fairly close to RQ-8 in size it would be quite a useful drone but I think traditional drones would be better at learning an enemy vessels location. More importantly firing an Anti-shipping missile without actually having a radar lock on it is pretty risky since the missiles seeker wont lock on til its close to the vessel in question which limits the likelihood of a first hit kill. The better way to do with is with a maritime patrol aircraft or large UAV with a datalink and its own surface search radar which allows the vessel firing the missile to stay out of the enemies radar/missile range. The method you suggest is of course possible but not as reliable but thats just my opinion, but still a very interesting thought, Kudos sir.
