U.S. military bases within range of IRGC artillery: general

TEHRAN, July 13 (MNA) -- The U.S. military bases in the region are within the range of the artillery of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, IRGC Brigadier General Abolqasem Forootan said on Wednesday.

“In the area of deterrence… it is natural that the artillery of the IRGC Ground Forces are ready to counter (threats posed) by U.S. military bases in the region,” he told the Fars News Agency.

Commenting on the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, he said Iraq incurred massive losses during the war, and the U.S. will suffer the same consequences if it wants to take any aggressive action against the Islamic Republic, since the IRGC is now more powerful and more efficient.

On June 28, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force, also said that Israel and the U.S. bases in the region are within the range of Iran’s missiles.

“The Americans have made our job easier. Their military bases in the region are in a range of 130, 250, and a maximum of 700 kilometers in Afghanistan, which we can hit with these missiles,” Hajizadeh added.

About 27,000 U.S. troops are deployed at various U.S. military bases in several Arab countries in the region, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.

salam all,

Rakhsh, I enjoy reading your posts.

It is a fact that the US is entrenched (and exposed) in Afghanistan, Iraq and other bases in the Persian gulf. It is also a fact that Iranian armed forces can strike these bases at their will. However I have afew questions in my mind.... 1) the accuracy of these missiles i.e CEP - whether these missiles will be able to hit and destroy individually or a massive barrage of saturation strikes? which warheads will they carry? - HE,cluster,FAE...did defense scientists develop different warheads? or did IRGC test them? and 2) the defenses of the US forces around those bases like patriot SAM's or the Aegis missile frigates.

^Salam brother. From what I read, Iran fields ballistic missiles of very high accuracy, such as the Fateh-110 and others, with CEPs of a few meters. The images of the recently unveiled Khalije Fars anti-ship ballistic missile impacting a targeted warship document this fact. As for hypothetical US counter-measures, one way to neutralize anti-ballistic missile SAMs, would be to saturate them with a large number of missiles plus decoys, all fired at once at the same target. Here, ballistic missiles will always maintain a comparative advantage, in that even 10 simultaneously launched, advanced ballistic missiles, will cost less to develop and to produce than a single newer generation Patriot or Aegis system.

I found the fact that numerous US bases are within range of Iranian artillery very interesting as well. This could offer the possibility to add another layer to Iran's deterrence against the US, if something like North Korean massive artillery tactics were to be used (the DPRK is said to field so many pieces of artillery, that Seoul could be devastated if each piece survives just long enough to fire a single round).

^Salam to you too brother,

Thank you for the response. Yes I saw the video of the khaleej e fars missile.

- Artillery? indeed interesting....am not too sure as to which the general is referring? tube/rocket artillery? towed gun? howitzer?...most probably rocket artillery of the fajr, nazeat or zelzal types.

Lets say to hit US 5th fleet base, the safe strike distance between coastal Iran and Qatar is around 250 kms.

Zelzal 2 has 210 kms range.
Nazeat has upto 130 kms range.
Fajr 5 has upto 75 kms range.
Fateh110 3G has >250 kms range with CEP of < 0.3% of range (so 250,000 meters X 0.3 % = 750 meters ) - hence CEP is less than 750 meters ....so it appears Fateh 110 will most probably be used to attack the 5th.
Khaleej e Fars is an anti-ship missile with pin point accuracy.

For other stationary US bases in Iraq, Afghanistan or Hejaz, I am doubtful as to the efficacy of towed/tracked artillery guns usefulness - because of range. But most certainly the general must be correct.
