Zulfiqar-1

I think i got the vast majority of the pictures floating about on the web, i know i missed one or two on the Z-3 part, but if anyone finds any i missed, post them and i'll add them to the original posts so we have all the images centralized and anyone who wants to reference them doesn't have to go hunting around the entire thread.

Thank you very much for that video Lur.
I posted it on IDF so we can get some input from all the ex-armor guys who have lots of experience on the issue, hopefully they can identify some key features in it.

The inside of the tank is the similar to the old ones that are military parks and museums in Iran, i don't think it is the Zulfiqar.

I thought about that, that it might be "too good to be true", but the fact that he has pictures form up on the tank, and close up of what is definitely the Zulfiqar, i believe it to be the real deal.

The photos are real with an explanation. This particular protype is one of the first technology demonstrators for the Z1 project back in late 1990's. I myself saw this one from close then.

This is not at all a gimic. It is a common practice in any industry that a tehnology demonstrator is a cheap model build with whatever is on the shelf to prove the concept. The technology demonstrators DO NOT get a big funds, in fact they are done with very little funds to attract big funds for actual prototypes and pilot production after that.

You will not see an interior of any operational Z's for obvious reasons. The minute you pass around the photos, much of its capabilities are known to your enemy.

Maybe those of the outside, but we are not sure about the ones in the inside, would they let someone take pictures of the inside?

Catsoo is probably right on this.

All one has to do to check if these are Real interior photos is compare it to M48/60 or chieftan tanks  because most of the equipment in the photos is in english When i Was in Abadan this summer i went into an old T-55/54 and their was not a single english word in the tanks equipment

Apparently the Gun is the british L7, according to M1A1_Tanker at IDF who is an ex-tanker in the US army.

Ayyash,

Your first photo is not Z series. It is Iranian upgraded Cheiften.

Ah yes, that must of have gotten in there by mistake

Also, i was doing some more research and found out the FCS on the Z-2 is the same one they use on the M-84, manufactured by Zrak in the former Yugoslavia.

ok so whats the deal with the Z series tanks, are these tanks being mass produced or not? its just that i have never seen these in large numbers. the thing is even if there was only one assembly plant dedicated to the z3 there should have been 100's of these by now. so whats the deal?
i know every one here knows this but insted of maintaining t55s, t72, chieftains and ets.. it would be so much more cost effactive to have one type of tank with one set of spare parts and trained mechanics.
am i just talking out of my butt here?

      :)

I think the refurbishment programs...  T-72Z and Safir 74 are the route Iran is going with armor...
It looks like doctrine is changing to a more asymmetic type warfare defense type doctrine and out right armored force on force is out...

What they have now in armor is enough for any real threat...   based on what looks like an asymmetic defensive doctrine that is being used in training...  Look at the most recent exercises...  small groups, jeeps with weapons platforms, troops or motorcycles with atgm / rpgs...  helo ...air assault ops...

I think the Zulfaqar Tank program is almost non exsistant...    just my two bits.
Respectfully,
Simple Bubba

Peace to You and Yours...

well thats the thing we never see these things in action. i know tanks might not be very important in the new iranian defensive doctrine but shouldn't we see at least 20 or 30 of these things together? if as they said they were being mass produced then something was roiling of those assembly lines right? am starting to think that the Z series tanks are just prototypes that have never been produced in any significant numbers.

Everytime i think of tanks, i think of the Markeva getting destroyed by Hezbollah and Israelis crying like babies.

Just Z1 and about 100. few z2 prototypes and few z3 ones too. When Iranians wanted to mass produce z3, they understood that they can upgrade their older tanks like T54/55/62/64/72. I think they got the point that T72 performed weak during US invasion of Iraq because of lack of necessary components like night vision , IR and laser tracking and ERA. Iraqi T72 didn't have any of these components and performed very weak against American Abrams. So they started to upgrade their fleet of older tanks with these and so they cut off their budget in order to preserve it for the missile program.

And also Iran can't export it's weapons to other countries due to sanctions. I think someone said it will be ready for export in 2010.
