Built by Yarrow Shipyards in the UK, these ships are smaller, more austere versions of the Royal Navy’s Sir Lancelot class. All four were ordered in the mid-1970s; the second two were cancelled after the Shah’s overthrow in 1980. However Yarrow had collected the materials and in 1983 Iran re-ordered the second pair as “hospital ships”. The second pair have a different engine fit than the first.

As delivered, the vessels were armed with four Bofors 40mm AA guns, during the war with Iraq a bow-mounted BM-21 MLRS and two .50-cal machine guns were added. The Bofors have since been replaced by ZU-23 twin AA guns. The second pair was delivered unarmed and fitted to this standard in Iran.

Payload is 5-9 tanks, depending on type; or 227 fully-equipped marines; or 600 tons dry cargo. A 10 ton crane services the cargo. Two LCVPs are carried.

Combat usage: During the Iran-Iraq War, these ships were not used in the amphibious role, however they proved quite useful as motherships for Pasadran small craft harassing tanker traffic in the Gulf; and as depot ships for minelayers.
