Firstly, I think we should possibly rename this thread to make it the "official" thread for the protests in Syria to keep things organized.

Today reports claim there were widespread protests all across Syria including a large number of protesters in the capital Damascus and with these reports includes claims of 49 protesters dead.

Now because of this, most US media outlets are claiming that the tone of the protests has changed from calls of reform to calls for regime change. This includes claimed footage of protesters decapitatiing a statue of Hafez Assad. Now I personally take such reports with a grain of salt but I am honestly very troubled by what's happening in Syria.

Regardless as to what you think of the Assad family, one can not deny the their rule has been the only stable period in recent Syrian history (if I remember properly there were 24 political revolutions before Hafez Assad came to power) and one wonders what will happen should his son fall from power. What is the likelihood of another government being able to rule Syria with real stability?

Indeed - I can't help but think chaos theory, if the assad regime falls. That is unlikely however, atleast not before Assad kills thousands. In my eyes , Syria has been the difficult one to form an opinion on. A pro-saudi regime is unacceptable, but at the same time I'm saddened to see many have been killed or will be killed.

Restraint must be practiced by both sides.

If Assad falls, everybody's f*cked in the region. You may ask why? Well, here's why..The organizers of these protests are stationed in Lebanon and Jordan with a huge dose of Saudi dollars.The Syrian Muslim brotherhood is pretty much like the Saudi backed Taliban in Afghanistan.The most extremist of Salafi, Wahhabis nut-jobs.Totally different from the Egyptian MB.

If Assad really feels threatened, something really bad will happen in Lebanon and maybe Jordan. If the violence ever get to the point of Libya, all hell will break lose and even not Israel will be spared.Remember, Syria's army's not as weak as Qaddafi's . We're looking at a major regional war in the making, folks - with clear Saudi instigation.Someone really needs to put them in their place...

I don't regard some of these types Muslims. They are prepared to destroy holy places, ancient stuff and things like that(like in Bahrain) to serve their masters for their protection. A true Muslim can never do such a thing time after time.

Israeli Forces, Tanks Cross into Gaza

Israeli occupation forces backed by tanks and bulldozers have crossed into the Gaza Strip, destroying Palestinian farmlands in north of the enclave.

Israeli soldiers apparently entered the Palestinian territory from Karni crossing on Wednesday and advanced hundreds of meters toward the east of Gaza City.

According to Press TV's correspondent in Gaza, Israeli soldiers dug a series of holes in the area and filled them with explosives.

Israeli soldiers then blew up the explosives, causing loud explosions in the area, our correspondent added.

Israeli officials claim that the troops were searching and destroying "possible tunnels" in the area that could be used by Palestinian resistance fighters to enter Israeli posts and capture Israeli soldiers.

But analysts believe the Israeli attack aimed at provoking Palestinian fighters into firing on Israeli troops, which could have escalated the situation.

It was the first Israeli attack on Gaza after the two main Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah, signed a unity deal.

Israel has repeatedly voiced anger at the reconciliation accord signed between the two Palestinian groups which aimed at forming a Palestinian unity government.

i cannot comprehand, a little rich kid who goes to syria can not comprehand how poor the country is, how bad the people live thier, and how bad thier economy is, how corupt the government is look up rami makhlouf, and i have also been to tunisia several times in vacation and while ben ali was president and i never got harrassed by the intelgence service or police but that dosen't change the fact that the tunisian people hate ben ali.

Some things to clarify if you guys don't mind:

1. Peace with Israel
Both Bashir and his father have made public statements that would suggest they would be willing to sign a treaty of peace with Israel in exchange for the Golan Heights. However Bashir has also stated he preferred some of kind of agreement between Israelis and Palestinians before he would agree to a treaty with Israel. However the recent talks that Turkey sponsored actually collapsed because the Israelis demanded Syria kick out HAMAS, Islamic Jihad, abandon Hezbollah and end their defence pact with Iran. As you might expect both sides saw each other's demands as unreasonable and they collapsed as such.

2. "Send in the Tanks"-
While not getting into a long drawn out Syrian-Israel war scenario..Syria probably hasn't sent tanks to the border with Israel for all these years simply because Assad isn't sure he can win. If he was fairly certain he could win he likely wouldn't bother with peace talks with Turkey serving as mediator. Likely, the Syrian military is more oriented towards deterring Israel from acting too aggressively against Syria but little more (a trend evidenced by their purchasing habits by the Syria Air Force). Futher evidence of this is that there are believed to be hundreds if not thousands of Syrian tanks that placed in defensive positions (aka "dug in") along the UN-run buffer zone between Israel and Syria, a practice not done by the Israelis (who instead keep a fairly small force near the border and many more farther away ready to head for the border should they be needed).

Now personally, I think there is some blame for these protests is on Assad's shoulders because I think he waited too long to announce political reforms (which he originally said he would put through years ago), the conflicting statements by the Syrian government during the early phase of the protests (some saying they would introduce reforms, others saying there would be no compromise), and Assad pretending it was his cabinet's fault these reforms didn't happen. If he had personally announced reforms and that HE would put them into effect instead of him saying he would leave that job up to the rubber stamp legislature I think alot of the momentum behind the current protest/revolts would have disappeared.
