Three US-led  troops die in Afghan war
Fri Aug 20, 2010 1:42PM

More than 440 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2010.
Three US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan where the foreign presence is experiencing one of its deadliest years since the 2001 invasion.

NATO said in a statement that an improvised bomb attack killed two of the soldiers in the country's volatile south on Friday.

The US-led military alliance, however, did not disclose the nationality of the soldiers and the exact location of the incident.

The US military, meanwhile, announced that an American soldier was killed in a similar incident on Thursday in the same region.

The deaths also bring the number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year to 441.

According to official figures, so far more than 2,000 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan. Figures released by Afghanistan's Baakhtar news agency, however, put the death toll at almost 4,500.

Earlier on Friday, a raid by US forces in eastern Afghanistan left a civilian dead and another one injured.

Reports say a woman was shot dead in the raid on her house in Khost Province.

NATO says the operation was aimed at capturing a Taliban commander.

Civilian casualties have increased dramatically in Afghanistan this year.

A recent UN report says nearly 1,300 Afghan civilians lost their lives in the first half of 2010.

24 killed  in attacks on US-led bases
Sat Aug 28, 2010 4:47PM

Taliban militants have launched increasingly brazen attacks in Afghanistan in recent months.
NATO says 24 militants have been killed and five others have been arrested after the Taliban launched an attack on two major US bases in Afghanistan.

The raid targeted US-run Forward Operating Base Salerno and Chapman in the eastern Afghan province of Khost located near the border with Pakistan.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said coalition forces repelled both attacks, adding that there were no coalition casualties in the fighting.

The Taliban said up to 30 militants attacked the US bases with rockets and machine guns in the early hours of morning.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman claimed several American soldiers were killed in the attacks.

"Already 18 American troops were killed and a US helicopter as well as an Afghan police vehicle were damaged" Mujahid said.

Taliban militants had also targeted the Chapman base last December, killing 7 CIA agents.

The December attack is considered the second-most deadly against American intelligence agents in the CIA's history, holding the second spot after a bombing attack on the US embassy in Beirut in 1983.

Two US  soldiers killed in Afghanistan
Thu Sep 2, 2010 6:38AM

Two American soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, bringing the death toll of US troops killed in the Afghan war to 326 so far this year.

According to NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), two US soldiers died following separate militant attacks, one in the east Afghanistan, and the other in the south on Thursday.

The number of foreign troops killed in war-ravaged Afghanistan so far in 2010 stands at 493, close to the 2009 total of 521, AFP reported.

Despite the casualties, commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan General David Petraeus said on Tuesday that deployments would reach 150,000 within days.

A new poll, released by Associated Press-GfK, indicates that a majority of Americans see no end in sight to the war and nearly six out of 10 oppose the nine-year-old conflict.

The issue will be a major headache in the US November mid-term elections, in which voters will be choosing one third of the Senate and the full House of Representatives.

Pundits say US President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party face an uphill battle, but Obama has expressed confidence that his party will retain control of both houses of Congress in the elections.

US-led  soldier killed in Afghanistan

A US-led soldier in Afghanistan
Another US-led soldier has been killed in a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan, a NATO statement says.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force says the soldier was killed on Friday by "an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan."

The Saturday statement did not reveal the nationality of the soldier.

Friday's death brings to 510 the number of US-led soldiers killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

According to official figures, more than 2,000 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

Figures released by the Afghan Baakhtar news agency; however, put the death toll near 4,500.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has sparked widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the continuation of the Afghan war.

'11 US-led  troops killed in Afghanistan'
Sat Oct 16, 2010 7:31AM

US-led soldiers in Afghanistan, file photo
Taliban claim that they have killed at least 11 US-led soldiers in a bomb attack in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed on Saturday that one of Taliban members blew himself up at a joint military base controlled by US-led foreign troops and Afghan forces and killed 11 soldiers and wounded several others, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Helmand Police Chief Asadullah Sherzad, however, rejected the claim, saying "only one Afghan policeman was killed" after the attacker blew himself up while security forces tried to arrest him in the front of the military base in Khanshin district.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force have not yet commented on the Friday incident.

This year has been the deadliest for the Western military alliance in Afghanistan with over 580 fatalities reported so far.

Western public opinion is growing increasingly tired of the war. Deaths of civilians in NATO and the US unauthorized attacks have also fueled tensions between Afghanistan and Western countries.

In another incident, a tribal leader was assassinated in the province by unknown armed men on Saturday.

Around 500 tribal leaders have been murdered in Kandahar alone since the start of the US-led invasion back in 2001.

Security remains fragile in the country despite the presence of some 150,000 foreign troops.

US-led  soldier killed in Afghanistan
Tue Oct 19, 2010 6:25AM

Another US-led soldier has been killed in southern Afghanistan, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says.

The soldier lost his life during "an insurgent attack," a NATO statement said on Tuesday without revealing the nationality of the trooper nor the exact location of the incident, AFP reported.

At least 594 US-led troops have been killed in the war-ravaged country so far this year.

The foreign soldiers' death toll in Afghanistan this year has reached the highest annual toll since the start of the US-led invasion of the country nearly nine years ago. A total of 521 soldiers lost their lives in 2009.

As casualties have risen in Afghanistan over the past few months, public opinion has begun turning against the war in the United States and other countries.

Also, hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months, with Afghans becoming more and more outraged over the seemingly endless number of deadly assaults.

The situation is adding fuel to the fire of anti-US sentiment in Afghanistan and the rest of the Islamic world.

Three US-led  troops killed in Afghanistan
Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:11AM

US-led forces guard a mountainous region in Afghanistan.
Three US-led service members have lost their lives in separate attacks in the troubled southern Afghanistan, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says.

The US-led forces said one soldier was killed in an attack by Taliban militants and the others died in a bomb blast. The nationalities of the soldiers are unknown.

Two Swedish soldiers were wounded in a Taliban attack in the north.

The incidents come as the number of attacks against foreign troops in Afghanistan has soared significantly in the past months amid a public outrage over the prolonged war in the country.

At least 596 foreign soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan in 2010 so far, making it the deadliest year for NATO since the start of the war in 2001. The total number of foreign troops killed stood at 521 last year.

The total US and NATO casualties in the past 20 months are more than the entire death toll in the first seven years of the war.

According to official figures, since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, more than 2,100 NATO forces have been killed.

This is while Afghanistan's Baakhtar News Agency puts the overall death toll of foreign troops at about 4,500.
