Press TV: I've just read off a number of names of missiles without their details. Could you just give us the details on what those various missiles mean?
Mokhtari: Well, the Nasr missile is a cruise missile with a range of 35 kilometers. It's fired from our fast patrol boats, the new range of fast patrol boats that we have; although, some of the older versions also carry the missile.
The Nour missile is a 120 kilometer anti-ship cruise missile. It is designed to sink a target of 10,000 tons and above.
We have Qader, which is an upgrade of the Nour missile of a sort. It has a range of 200 kilometers. We have shore-based batteries of the missile. We've been showing shore-based batteries firing targets out to sea. But the missile will be carried as standard kit on Iran's guided missile frigates and destroyers.
Also, in terms of the air defense capability on Iran's ships, they've incorporated a missile called Mehrab. It is a deadly accurate missile and it has a radar absorbent coating. It can be used for both attacks on aerial threats and also can be used as an anti-radiation missile. The missile has been long in the coming. There is an air launched version of the missile also which is carried by the heavier aircraft in Iran's air force inventory.
Also, with the Qader missile, I have to say that the 200 kilometer cruise missile is also coated with radar absorbent material which makes it difficult to intercept via the equipment available to the threats in the region.
Press TV: Mr. Nader, just put this into context for us for those who don't understand all this missile talk in detail. How big a step is this for Iran?
Mokhtari: This is probably the first time Iran has managed to effectively incorporate air defense onto its major war ships. It is a major, major step because it means that they can operate independently of an air force in open seas. And these are all steps being taken to make the Iranian Navy capable of undertaking missions in open seas and the oceans for long periods of time.
Also, the Qader missile is a mighty missile because it is a mobile shore missile, and it can be along the 1,000 kilometer coast or so of Iran, with the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Also, it would give Iran the cutting edge over any other Navy that it might come across because the missile's long range and accuracy make it a major, major threat for anyone wanting to try something funny.
