Iran mass-produces cruise missiles

A senior Iranian commander says the Islamic Republic of Iran's Air Force (IRIAF) has managed to produce domestically-manufactured smart weaponry, including new cruise missiles.

Iran has mass-produced and test-fired new cruise missiles which have the capability to destroy naval targets, IRNA quoted IRIAF Deputy Commander for Operations General Mohammad Alavi as saying on Sunday.

He added that Iranian experts also managed to change the structure of ground-based missiles to air-based missiles and install them on fighter bombers of Iran's Army.

General Alavi added that Iran also produced ultra-heavy bombs with huge tonnage and high destructive capabilities.

He expressed hope that Iranian experts would make great achievements pertaining to electronic war.

The top Iranian commander warned neighboring and regional states that Iran's Air Force is fully prepared to “strongly counter any threat.”

On April 18, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said Iran's Army has been equipped with a new cruise missile and missile defense system.

“Recently, we witnessed the test-firing of Shahin (Hawk) and Shalamcheh missiles of the country's defense system, which were successfully tested and delivered" to different army units, he said.

Brigadier General Vahidi added that Zafar (Triumph) missiles, "the fastest cruise missiles," can, together with other systems, substantially boost the country's defense capabilities.

His comments came after Iran announced that it has successfully test-fired another air-defense missile system dubbed Sayyad-2 (Hunter II).

The newly tested system is an upgraded version of the Sayyad-1 system with higher precision, range and defensive power and will be unveiled in the near future.

Sayyad-1 is comprised of two-stage missiles that can target all kinds of aircraft, including bombers, at medium and high altitudes. It is also equipped with a 200-kilogram warhead and has a speed of 1,200 meters per second.

The Sayyad-1 anti-aircraft missile system can be used in electronic warfare and against low radar cross-section systems.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

In January, Iran successfully test-fired mid-range, surface-to-air Hawk missile and the Iranian Defense Ministry delivered new cruise missile systems to the Navy.

The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea.

The Navy has successfully test-fired a range of powerful missiles mounted with laser technology, which display high precision and have a range of 45 km (28 miles) to 300 km (186 miles).

Nasr-1 Is a domestically-manufactured highly accurate Iranian short range cruise missile capable of evading radar. It has the capability of destroying 3,000-tonne targets such as warships. Nasr-1 missile can be launched from both inland bases and offshore military vessels and being modified to be fired from helicopters and submarines. In December 2008, an Iranian naval forces successfully test-fired the surface-to-surface Nasr-1 during the final stage of "Unity 87" wargames in the Persian Gulf waters. Following the successful test fire, on 7 March 2010 Iran's defence minister announced a mass-production line of Nasr-1 missiles.

Kh-55 Granat / AS-15 Kent

The Kh-55 (Russian: Х-55; NATO:AS-15 'Kent'; RKV-500;) is a Soviet/Russian air-launched cruise missile, designed by MKB Raduga. It has a range of up to 3,000 km (1,620 nmi) and can carry conventional or nuclear warheads.

It is powered by a single R95-300 turbofan engine, with pop-out wings for cruising efficiency. It can be launched from both high and low altitudes, and flies at subsonic speeds at low levels (under 110 m/300 ft altitude). After launch, the missile's folded wings, tail surfaces and engine deploy. It is guided through a combination of an inertial guidance system plus a terrain contour-matching guidance system which uses radar and images stored in the memory of an onboard computer to find its target. This allows the missile to guide itself to the target with a high degree of accuracy, with a reported CEP of 15 meters.

In March 2005 Ukraine's prosecutor-general Svyatoslav Piskun said that in 2001, 12 Kh-55's had been exported to Iran in a deal allegedly worth US$49.5 million and six to China. It has also been reported that Iran has started producing the missiles locally and is working on a longer range version.

Iran Tests Nasr Cruise Missile in Naval Wargames

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy fired several smart short-range coast-to-sea and sea-to-sea 'Nasr' (Victory) cruise missiles during the ongoing naval wargames, codenamed Velayat 90, in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman on Monday.

The advanced Nasr cruise missile, which had already been test-fired on different vessels and for sea-to-sea targeting, was this time launched from a coastal launch pad to hit a naval target. The missile hit the target with 100% precision and destroyed it completely.

The smart Nasr missile is viewed as a good complement for Iran's coastal defense units which are equipped with various types of missile and artillery systems. Military experts believe that Nasr increases the Navy's targeting capabilities in any possible confrontation with those enemy vessels infiltrating the country's territorial waters.

Earlier this year, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi had announced that the country's Navy had equipped its new high-speed vessels named 'Zolfaqar' with 'Nasr 1' cruise missiles capable of destroying 3-ton weighted vessels.

"The Zolfaqar vessel is considered as a new model of the vessels of the same class which is capable of conducting operations in different marine conditions thanks to its sea-to-sea missiles and proper speed," Vahidi said.

Reminding that the vessel has been strengthened with the Nasr 1 cruise missile, he reiterated, "The sea-to-sea cruise missile with high destructive capability and targeting power has immensely increased the vessel's power."

In December 2008, the Iranian naval forces had successfully test-fired the surface-to-surface Nasr 1 in the final stage of Unity 87 wargames in the Persian Gulf waters.

The surface-to-surface Nasr-1 missile was fired from a warship and hit its target at a distance of 30 km (19 miles) and destroyed it. It was the first test of the missile.
