(Reuters) - Two Iranian naval ships have sailed through Egypt's Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, in a move likely to be keenly watched by Israel.

"Two Iranian ships crossed through the Suez Canal (on Thursday) following permission from the Egyptian armed forces," a source in the canal authority said Friday.

The destroyer and a supply ship could be on their way to the Syrian coast, the source added. Iran and Syria agreed to cooperate on naval training a year ago, and Tehran has no naval agreement with any other country in the region.

Two Iranian warships sailed along the strategic waterway on February 17 last year, in a move that Israel called a "provocation."

Syria and Iran are hostile to Israel.

Egypt's military, which has a close defense ties with the United States, has been governing the country since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak a year ago.

The Suez Canal cuts through Egypt and allows shipping to pass from the Middle East to Europe and vice versa, without going around southern Africa.

Jamaran and another ship docked to Tartous yesterday.

Is it possible and reasonable to create constant naval base in Syria? For example, In Lattakia.

Thing that interest me the most is What is Kharg carrying??And we must mention Shahid Naqdi destroyer. It is brilliant that this ship is able to sail all the way to the Syria. As almost 50 years old it is great achievement.Iran overhaul and refurbishment capabilities are astonishing.

I dont think its jamaran ... Its called Shahid Qandi .. Most probably they are transporting some sensitive equipment to Syria.

Concerning. Permanent presence, at the moment there is no need for it ... Even if a war took place few ships will not make a difference

Good points. Kharq is a 30000 tons ship that can carry large amount of military equipments.
Maybe Ballistic missiles for possible involvement with foreign parties, I think UAV's and guided ammunitions are suitable for using against militant too.

Iit may be considered as political move. But I'm not insisting that this is reasonable for now.

Last time after the ships were there, anti ship missiles were on way to Gaza from Syria. What one can be sure of is that the kharg ship is full :D ... Of surprizes. Personally i think long range missiles that can hit deep in turkey. UAVs are good idea as well.

A canal authority stated it was the Alvand. However it was the Shahid Naqdi that was at KSA port with Kharg (18th task force).

Need pics.

There was no indication whether it was new picture or from previous sailing through suez canal. We have to check whether this same ship passed through the canal in previous occasion.

Iranian navy ships return from Syria through Suez

(Reuters) - Two Iranian naval ships returned from Syria through the Suez Canal Tuesday, a Suez Canal source said.

The ships entered the canal from the Mediterranean Sea early in the morning, heading south toward the Red Sea, and were expected to leave the canal Tuesday afternoon, the source said.

The ships had docked at the Syrian port of Tartous, in a show of support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a regional ally of Iran.

Exactly..This is why I get very suspicious when the Zionist media report news about "captured" Iranian weapons in Turkey or anywhere else..I mean, if the Iranian government really wants to send something to Syria, why would they fly it over hostile airspace like Turkey and risk being intercepted??

the8march, you right..Those ships were definitely delivering something very important or sensitive..I don't think it's missiles or guns but more likely electronic warfare equipment..I heard the terrorist rebels are having difficulty with their satellite communications as they're being jammed..It also seems the "news" coming from Syria has slowed down since this ship went there. I could be wrong????

Reza, Syria has jamming and electronic warfare abilities ... they have a unit for that .. and i am pretty sure they listen to israeli/turkey communication ... Iran and Russia helped syria in the past with this ... For example Aljazeera is being jammed from Syria (and Iran) now

But maybe they have something missing and need to get it... They have to jam the satellite telephone communication ... The rebels are mainly using this ... so maybe they needed equipment for doing that ... or internet satellite communication as this is the only way the rebels are delivering their fake videos through

I doubt that Syria needs missiles ... their arsenal is still full ... some UAVs could be needed as well ... we have to keep in mind that Russia is delivering everything they need too ... so they are getting from Iran what they dont normally get from Russia

True..Syria has a massive missile arsenal slightly comparable to Iran's..Iran helped them in that field..Syria even builds her own missiles (I think they build a copy of the Fatteh missiles). Fact is, the strategic importance of Syria to Iran and Russia is so great these two countries wouldn't allow Syria to fall..Syria's helped Iran during the dark years after the greatest revolution in the region by Khomeini in Iran..They sided with Iran when all Arab puppets threw their support for Saddam.

The "defected" army officers in Turkey claim the Syrian army is runny short of ammo..I laugh!!! I mean, Syria hasn't even tapped into her strategic reserves yet..They're not even using fighter jets and helicopters against these foreign back mercenaries. The Brits and other Western countries have made no secret about their supply of "vital" communication equipments to the rebels..Once this is cut, they're in the dark and can be picked off one by one.

The Russians, though, don't like too powerful allies..So what Syria cannot get from Russia, they get from Iran and vice versa..
