Iran to Unveil Several Home-Made Destroyers, Missile Frigates Soon

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran will soon unveil 10 types of home-made naval vessels, including different classes of destroyers and missile-launching frigates, a senior Iranian Navy commander announced on Tuesday.

Speaking to FNA on Tuesday, Lieutenant Commander of the Navy for Technical Affairs Rear Admiral Abbas Zamini reminded that the designing and building of Jamaran destroyer, a Mowdge 1 Class vessel, showed Iran's high technical know-how and capabilities in manufacturing battleships, and added that the country is already manufacturing a second generation of the hi-tech vessel.

The construction phase of Velayat destroyer, a Mowdge 2 Class vessel, is 70% through, he said, and added that the vessel is under construction in Iran's Northern port city of Bandar Anzali.

The admiral declared that Velayat will be launched this Iranian year (ends on March 2013).

"In addition" the commander stated "construction of other Mowdge and Sina-class destroyers are underway including Mowdge 3 and 4 projects."

He further announced that construction of a Mowdge 5 class destroyer, named Sahand, will end in the near future, and the Navy vessel will be launched this year.

The Admiral noted the manufacture of Sina-class missile-launching frigates, and said that construction of three classes of this Navy vessel is on Iran's agenda.

He also mentioned that the Iranian defense ministry and the Navy are working on four projects to build four different classes of warships, and said the four projects are called Sina 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Iran's first home-made destroyer, Jamaran, was launched in late February 2010. The Mowdge Class vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities and is armed with a variety of anti-ship, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

Jamaran is also equipped with different kinds of weapons, including a powerful and smart missile named 'Nour' (light).

My English isn't good, but I think there are mistranslations  and mistakes in English report of Fars:

I believe this announcement is tagged with much politics behind it. Velayat has been taking too long of a time and is yet to be completed. I wonder about the timing calculations of other ships and add to this the delay in submarine launch, satellite launches and the nuclear sub.  I can only point to IAEA negotiations as the target audience for such similar news.

I think the reason that building Velayat took long time is that development of subsystems of it (maybe radar and airdefence systems or propulsion systems) took time , so if production line of these subsystems is launched, likely Iran can to complete building all Mowj class frigates in short time.

Iran plans to build 10 new destroyers

TEHRAN – The deputy commander of the Iranian Navy has announced that Iran plans to build 10 new domestically designed destroyers.

In an interview with the Persian service of the Fars News Agency published on Tuesday, Rear Admiral Abbas Zamini said that the Navy has planned to design and manufacture 10 new destroyers in addition to the Jamaran and Velayat destroyers.

He added that the plan envisaged manufacturing seven destroyers of the Sina class, which were capable of firing missiles, and three destroyers of the Mowj class.

Iran’s first domestically manufactured destroyer, the Jamaran, was launched in February 2010.

The warship can carry helicopters and is equipped with torpedoes and electronic radar. It is 94 meters long and weighs over 1,500 tons.

The destroyer is capable of engaging in surface, air, and undersea warfare.

In September 2011, Navy Commander Habibollah Sayyari announced that the second domestically manufactured destroyer would join the country’s naval fleet in the near future.

Rear Admiral Sayyari said that the Jamaran II (Velayat) was highly advanced and differed greatly from the Jamaran.

Zamini also said that about 70 percent of the project to build the Velayat destroyer had been completed and expressed hope that the destroyer would be launched during the current Iranian calendar year, which started on March 20.

Iran to build more ships, boost naval presence

By Isabel Coles

DUBAI, June 21 | Thu Jun 21, 2012 6:37am EDT

(Reuters) - The Iranian navy has announced plans to build more warships and increase its presence in international waters at a time of growing tension in the Middle East over Tehran's nuclear programme.

Navy commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the deployments would protect Iranian cargo ships around the world, in particular in the Gulf of Aden and the northern part of the Indian Ocean, according to state news agency IRNA.

The navy wanted to guard Iranian ships from Somali pirates, the report said.

IRNA did not mention Israel although the Jewish state has hinted it might take military action against Iran's nuclear programme.

An Israeli official repeated the veiled threat on Wednesday following the failure of the latest round of international talks to make progress on the issue.

State-owned Press TV quoted Sayyari as saying: "Our presence in international waters is aimed at safeguarding the interests of the Islamic Republic and strengthening military power to defend Iran."

"So we will multiply our efforts to enhance our military might and have a presence in international waters," he said.

The navy's deputy chief for technical affairs said the force planned to build 10 more vessels, including destroyers and missile-launching frigates, Press TV said.

Work on building the ships would start after construction of "Velayat" a Mowj-2 class destroyer is completed. That is due at the end of the Iranian calendar year next March.

Iranian military officials often assert their military strength in the region, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil transit channel carrying supplies from Gulf producers to the West.

Tehran has previously threatened to block the waterway if attacked.

Two Iranian warships entered the Mediterannean through the Suez Canal in February 2011 for the first time, and naval vessels also called at a Syrian naval base this February in a show of support for its ally President Bashar al-Assad.

it is obviously a Good news ...

I however think that investing in surface fleet would require two things as must for Iran if we r considering US as enemy  in Kahlije Fars ...

--> Air defence

CIWS Point defense system  (Compact Naval version of Mesbah-1)
ARH + IIR SAMs

-->  Surface ship Anti Torpedo System ....

- Passive Sonar decoy / signal generator to fool in coming torpedo passive sonar by emitting simulated Characteristic ship noise +  Active sonar decoys / Amplifier , presenting larger false target to the torpedo.

- Torpedo Detection system consisting of an active source emitter +  towed array receiver  AND  Active + Passive sonobuoys with controllable feature from mother vessel .
