Iran to Equip Jamaran Destroyer with Semi-Conductor Radars
TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian commander lauded the achievements made by the country's Navy in different fields, including naval radars, and announced that the Navy plans to equip its Jamaran destroyers with highly advanced radars.
"Soon, Jamaran destroyer will be equipped with a kind of radar that is among the highly advanced ones in the world. It is a semi-conductor radar with Fuzzy arranged flat antennas (flat slotted array antennas)," Deputy Commander of the Iranian Navy for Research and Self-sufficiency Jihad Capitan Mansour Maqsoudlou told reporters.
Iran's first home-made destroyer, Jamaran, was launched in late February 2010. The Mowdge Class vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities and is armed with a variety of anti-ship, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.
Jamaran successfully test-fired different kinds of weapons, including a powerful and smart missile named 'Nour' (light).
Maqsoudlou further announced that the Iranian Navy is going to build a number of vessels and submarines in future.
"Designing heavy vessels is underway and semi-heavy vessels such as Jamaran and Peykan are in mass-production line now," the commander noted.
As regards the submarines, the commander stated that the Iranian navy is designing heavy submarines.
Iran's naval power has even been acknowledged by foes. In a Sep. 11, 2008 report, the Washington Institute for the Near East Policy said that in the two decades since the Iraqi imposed war on Iran, the Islamic Republic has excelled in naval capabilities and is able to wage unique asymmetric warfare against larger naval forces.
According to the report, Iran's Navy has been transformed into a highly motivated, well-equipped, and well-financed force and is effectively in control of the world's oil lifeline, the Strait of Hormuz.
