I dont think they should waste money making it tbh, the other boats they make the really fast ones would be better in my opinion. they should make something that can go underwater on water and fly :)

The video shows a two seater one as well, why would that be needed? Also, can they fly on land?

They could perhaps be more practical than boats on the marshlands bordering Iraq...but other than that I see no real need for them. Stealthier boats would be a better investment imo.

I agree while it appears cool the money would have been better well spent elsewhere

Stealth flying  boats join IRGC fleet
Tue Sep 28, 2010 4:59PM

Over 10 Bavar 2 flying boats have been delivered to the IRGC.
Iran takes the design and manufacturing of domestic-built military hardware to a new level by delivering stealth flying boats to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

"Bavar 2," is a radar-evading fixed-wing seaplane capable of patrol and reconnaissance missions. At least 11 flying boats joined the IRGC fleet on Tuesday after an official ceremony.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said the new delivery was in line with the country's efforts to boast regional security.

"Equipping the country's Naval and Armed forces with advanced and modern weaponry will bolster the stability and security of the region and play an effective role in consolidating Iran's deterrent power," a statement on the Defense Ministry's website quoted Vahidi as saying.

The country has finished several major defense projects this year, despite several rounds of UN Security Council sanctions targeting Iranian military and financial sectors over Western allegations that Tehran is following a military nuclear program.

Iran will soon unveil and launch the second generation of Jamaran destroyers, Sina class frigates as well as a new generation of submarines, Commander of the Iranian Army Major General Ataollah Salehi announced last Wednesday.

In August, the Iranian Navy was equipped with four more domestically-made stealth Ghadir class mini-submarines.

For a good while I was scratching my head that how with such a small engine Bavar2 can carry any weapons at all. But once I saw the two seater version, I was convinced that it can carry a 100 Kg load. Now, as far as missiles are concerned, I have no idea where that missile would be launched from. Definitely a composite craft such as this one flying low will have a low CS to the radar especially in a 100 % humidity climate such as Persian Gulf. Nevertheless, Bavar2 must get close enough to its target to be within the small missile's range. But being as noisy as it is and as close as it must come to its target, I don't see its military role beyond an observation post.

I'm sorry guys, coming from a layman, other than training or even selling them commerically, or even perhaps the fruition of a pet project by an 'up and coming favorite', these things look like a joke.

C'mon.

for the coast gaurd like observation they could be good or search and rescue but as far as military value in lets say a war then yes they are useless, Iran could get into the civilian market with these also and make some side money

I don't see this craft performing any combat duties. However,it's useful for search and rescue missions. And more importantly for coastal border patrols. It can cover long distance quicker than patrol boats and alert of any smuggling activities by giving precise location of smuggling vessels. From what i see,it could be a prototype for something that can be further developed by engineers in future with more capabilities.
So this may not be the wonder weapon as some expected but a start of good things to come.At least no state in the gulf region has been able to produce this.To say it's a waste is not being kind..Just a thought.. :)

A  nice machine. Like the Volkesjager from the jerman in the war can this be an weapon that fill a gap. Also when the airstrips are destroyed this machine can still be used. On different sites i read that the americans shoot this thing easy down.....But like in the second war when the germans had the best machines. A simpel weapon in bigger numbers can make a differents.

But beside that i think it is a nice coastal patroll machine.

For coastal patrol or any form of reconnaissance, a light plane would be better...

I really wonder why they have invested money in this project lol. Although, it could very well be that the military simply has sponsored a university project (they mention something regarding this in one of the videos). Innovation tends to be inefficient and based on trial and error and we shouldn't always expect great results.

MSNBC's Laurence O'Donnell poking fun at these 'flying boats'.  I have to reluctantly agree with him.  BTW, for those who don't know, MSNBC, by low American standards, is the most liberal and truth speaking of the networks. Again, relatively speaking.

His comments are totally stupid! Comparing Bavar-2 with B-2 and imaging and data transmission capabilities Iran has to a blackberry! That's stupid.

I really don't see the use of these vehicles in the military... even for the limited goals they're meant for, we have better alternatives.... though they're good for crossing certain areas between Iran and Iraq.... but... meh...

Iran’s Hornets Nest at Bandar Abbas

Bavar-2 amphibian seaplane is equipped with maritime surveillance equipment, and communications for recce and target acquisition over the sea. The new plane is operated by the Iranian revolutionary Guards naval units. Photo: Fars news agency, by Vahid reza Alaei.
Iran is preparing a massive force of small but highly capable combat elements capable of disrupting oil transportation through the Persian Gulf and the Straight of Hurmoz choke point. The Iranians have developed unique operational concepts employing coordinated swarm attacks that could effectively defeat large, well protected surface combatants such as those operated by the allied naval forces present at the Gulf. Many of these Swarm elements are currently stationed at the naval base at Bandar Abbas, acting as the Swarm’s ‘Hornets Nest’ at the southern end of the Hurmoz Straits in the Persian Gulf. In recent, highly publicized naval exercises held by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’, swarm attacks were demonstrated by engaging targets from extended range by anti-ship missiles, while smaller fast boats were closing in at high speed, firing rockets and Rocket propelled Grenades (RPG) from very short range.

In recent years Iran is escalating its swarm capabilities to higher levels, with the development of indigenous weapons and platforms tailored for the Persian Gulf Theater of operation. Among these elements are mini submarines, amphibian seaplanes, high speed missile boats and medium range anti-ship missiles. All are designed as compact, cost efficient element that together, creating a force multiplier that cannot be ignored even by the world’s largest, most capable navies.

A key element in this ‘hornets nest’ is the Ghadir mini-submarine. The first two locally built subs were delivered in 2008 and this year during a visit at the base four subs were visible. These submarines built for short missions operating at shallow water, carrying out coastal reconnaissance, mine laying and engagement of surface targets, including moving vessels and oil rigs. Mining by submarines could become one of Iran’s modus operandi as detection or attribution of such action to the actual perpetrator is almost impossible.

Another element of the hornets nest was unveiled this week, as Iran’s Revolutionary Guards naval units displayed over a dozen planes during an official visit of the Guards’ commander, brig. General Ahmad vahidi at Bandar Abbas. Unveiled as a prototype in 2006, Bavar-2 is designed to operate as a rapid reaction force, equipped with aerial cameras and communications links transmitting images in real-time to command centers at sea or on land. The seaplane is also equipped with a machine gun. It is flown by a single pilot and is fitted to operate in day or night, using night vision devices.

In August 2010 the Iranians unveiled the ‘sting’ of the hornets – the new Zulfikar fast patrol boats (shown in the video below), an all-aluminum built fast boat armed with Iranian-made Nasr-1 medium range anti-ship missiles. (actually, an Iranian version of the Chinese C-704 missile). The Iranians plan to deploy large numbers of these boats, armed with the locally produced missiles, being able to saturate the defenses of highly protected surface vessels.

The new Bavar-2 amphibian seaplane, designed to perform short range maritime surveillance, coastal patrol and provide target acquisition for the Zulfikar fast boats, enabling them to launch their missiles at maximum range, thus avoiding counter attack from the surface. As an amphibian, Bavar-2 has unique capabilities, such as flying at very low level and ‘perching’ at sea level, thus evading detection by hostile radars.

In times of crisis it is assumed that the fast boats, submarines and seaplanes will disperse to many coastal locations, from where they will be able to launch surprise attacks against merchant ships, tankers or military targets. The submarines and amphibians will provide the eyes and ears for the missile carrying fast fast boats, which could group into attack swarms to strike and disperse immediately after it, thus making it difficult for the enemy to launch an effective counter strike.

US has to engage these boats long time before they are within reach of its navy.

Failure to do so will result the navy ships to take serious hit or even be sunken.

The only way to do this is use aircrafts, since these boats will fire their missiles long time before they are within range of the navy ships guns. Also the number of these boats make the navy's defense system overwhelmed. I do not think it is possible to target these small and high speed boats with canons.

If we know the probability of a hit by US aircraft with a target moving at such high speed, how many bombs they can carry each, then it is a very simple to emulate/simulate the situation in a computer game to see how many ships is needed to defeat a US aircraft carrier fleet.

I think as a counter physiological war. Iran should make such a game, put it online so people can experience it.
