Some of the Ghadir class (SSC) submarines appear possibly to be refurbishment/upgrade, rather than new builds.  (Hard to tell with the photo quality.)

Ayyash, I list IRINS Hendijan as PBO 1410 and not hull number 1402 (Janes 2005-2006 edition). Do you have a source for your hull number ID?

Hendijan is the name of the class, also known as the MIG-S-4700-SC (Naval Institute Guide to Combat Fleets of the World). Confusingly, Hendijan is also the name of a ship within in the class; sort of like the way the Alvand is both a ship and a class.

I'm looking at the photos in reply 18. You can't see the hull number in the low-quality previews, you have to open the HQ versions. The hull number is visible on the front, starboard side of the Hendijan.

Right, that hull number is 1402. I list hull number (source: Janes) for IRINS Hendijan (which is a ship name, not class designation) as 1410. Do you have a source for 1402 being the hull number for IRINS Hendijan?

I have to say, IRINS Hendijan being the third ship build for the class using a 1400 numbered series, that would logically make it 1402.

A source would be appreciated.

Sorry, I was only talking about it being a Hendijan, I didn't mean to imply that it was the Hendijan,

No worries.

You know, this wouldn't have been the first time my Janes Fighting Ships 2005-2006 edition has been at odds with Naval Institute Guide. It happened with ID-ing IRINS Tonb, as well.

It's not clear if the shown subs are new or not but let's assume they are.

1) Nahang
Mainly intended for the Caspian? Although still a relatively peaceful (i.e. "Yankee-free") environment, it would not be unwise to build up some stealthy resources there for credible deniability ops (a leverage against littoral states becoming too greedy in their "Caspian Treaty" demands).

2) Qaaem(Kilo)
Apparently not given a lot of priority. Intended to patrol the Arabian Sea (if I wanted to be as infantile as the petro-sheikhs I'd call it the "Persian" Sea) although not only too small to go it alone beyond the western Indian Ocean/Red Sea/eastern Med but also too big (too expensive, too few) to accompany Iranian freighter convoys as a deterrence against interdiction at sea by overzealous countries (cf. "Cyprus explosion").

3) Ghadir
It looks like they want to keep churning them out but aren't there already enough given that they are too small to go beyond the PG?!... unless you pair them to a convoy "mother ship" providing them with fuel or a fresh battery charge (so in theory they hardly ever have to resurface) and fresh crews (frogmen?). Maybe more convoy ships could be fitted with such facilities because, if the mother ship gets sabotaged, you'll also loose the sub unless you're prepared to tow it all across the globe back to its base. IMO it's a pity the Ghadirs seem too small to carry AShM  -against ships and littoral military and oil facilities-  and AA missiles (against helo boarding parties mainly) besides torpedoes.

Hiya, the Nahang in the Caspian? I wouldn't have thought that. There is finally satellite imagery at Bandar-e Abbas of the Nahang here: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0KuJ6JPZxII/TptM57U6XaI/AAAAAAAAAOk/gVtAK2DYVZc/s1600/Iran+BeA+Nahang.jpg
