Rocket is not the challenge. An ape can build one. In most safety conscious countries saltpetre is a controlled chemical which means that getting that might be challanging unless you got legitimate reasons for obtaining it (eg. got a farm).The tricky part is the warhead. Building a reliable fuse and usefull fragmentation warhead... that´s tough.

You can produce your own kno3 with some components you found in your garden, some wood ash, some real shit, a lot of time, a lot of peeing on it and a pot for boiling up. The chemical background called nitrification.

One of my hobbies is figuring out how to produce my own equivalents of store-bought items, particularly backpacking gear and other equipment for the outdoors (i'm working on a cedar strip canoe off-and-on right now). Anyways, one of these projects involved dabbling in producing my own modelrockets, unfortunately I was never able to have enough precision to get a good batch of fuel. Entertaining nonetheless though.
