Armenian expert: Iran may become counterweight to Pakistan

April 3, 2012 - 15:52 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - War with Iran will have grave consequences for the whole South Caucasus region, first of all Armenia, according to a political analyst.

“Armenia’s energetic stability will suffer greatly due to Iran’s being the only alternative to unreliable Georgia,” Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan told a press conference, linking the U.S. tough rhetoric on Iran with the forthcoming elections and the need for powerful Jewish lobby’s backing.

“The U.S. currently has 3 allies in the Middle East-Israel: Israel, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. All these three countries attempt to deter strengthening of Iran, though they hold different stances. On the other hand, Iran won’t shift its position on Pakistan following development of a nuclear weapon,” the political analyst said.

According to him, Iran is greatly concerned over Pakistan, which possesses a nuclear weapon. Mr. Melik-Shahnazaryan further forecast Iran’s becoming counterweight to Pakistan and its stabilizing factor in the region.

The whole world is slightly concerned with nuclear armed Pakistan as long as they have such an unstable government.

There is no way around it, like it or not (for all those who don't like Pakistan) but Iran and Pakistan will HAVE TO work together in the future for it is the only way to bring peace in Afghanistan. Do we want Afghanistan, our neighbor to be a narco-state and the hear of Salafi/Wahabi extremism and terrorism? After the Americans leave, Iran and Pakistan have to do something about this and will have to cooperate. More and more Pakistanis are realizing that their current foreign policy is a disaster and certainly not the way to go, the regime in Pakistan will have to chose in the near future to change course or completely collapse.
Saudi Arabia, the financier and supporter of Salafists and the Muslim Brotherhood, and a dictatorial regime that occupied Bahrain when the Arab Spring arrived there. It occupies neighbors and now it is thinking of annexing them. A global embarrassment, a political remnant of the Middle Ages that oppresses women, workers and children.

I agree with the sentiment but I'm afraid the trajectory Pakistan is currently on points to a dire, not too distant, future.   This will have profound regional and global effect.  I really hope I'm wrong.

You expect pakistan to help you remove wahabis from afghanistan when they themselves promote wahabis in afghanistan ? saudis are the board of directors and pakis are the labourers while the product is wahabi nutjobs.

Pakistan want afghanistan to be its puppet state like it was under taliban...it does not want neutral afghanistan or worse pro-India afghanistan. Any level headed stable govt would choose to be neutral in afghanistan and because of this reason only pakis will send in the taliban once again.

Russia, Iran and India aided the northern alliance against the saudi and paki funded taliban in afghanistan. If you want stable afghanistan then either pakis turn 180 degrees (which is like expecting israel to send you nukes as a gift  ;)) or taliban is defeated.

What a stupid article. India is the counterweight to Pakistan. It has a much stronger military power than Iran at the current time and is rapidly expanding its military to counter China as well.

Pakistan has on many occassions tried to project itself to the west, and has failed to do so due to many reasons. On one occassion some years ago they even tried to create and lead a coalition of sunni states against Iran. Pakistan is not a power by itself, it has a failed system of governance, judiciary, economy, and relies on others to keep it from disintegration. For this reason, it can project its mild power into some parts of Afghanistan, but not further.

The best counter to its own potential power, has always been its retarded self.

No disrespect intended to the Pakistanis, they are a nice people.

This is the little game empire play..It's called DIVIDE AND CONQUER..Why should Iran be a pawn to counter Pakistan??? Iran's ties with Pakistan and India goes a long way..Way back even before Pakistan or India became states...The West can take their stupid games elsewhere...
